Position: Equipment Operator (Level I, II, and III)

Pay Classification: Non-exempt

Job Classification: Full-time

Pay Grade: NH-3 (Level I), NH-4 (Level II), NH-6 (Level III)

Department: Public Services

Responsible To:

Public Works Director

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, responsible for operation of heavy equipment for the maintenance and improvement of the City’s Public Services infrastructure. Will be operating heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoe, front-end loaders, track loader, and bulldozers. Will also perform manual labor tasks as required by the department.

Duties/Responsibilities:

· Responsible for operation of front-end loader in the loading and moving of dirt and rock.

· Responsible for operation of skid steerer and backhoe for leveling and excavation work.

· Required to interact with the general public, and responsible for responding to their questions or concerns.

· Responsible for operation of heavy-duty dump truck and bucket truck.

· Required to clean and assist in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

· Performs daily safety checks on equipment.

· Assist with general manual labor tasks as needed. This includes, but not limited to, repair and maintenance of City streets and curbs, landscaping and grounds maintenance, leaf pickup, and street signage installation and repair.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

· Extensive knowledge and experience with heavy equipment operation.

· Ability to perform routine maintenance to equipment along with the ability to identify any areas in need of repair.

· Knowledge of occupational safety practices and principles as it relates to heavy equipment operation.

· Required to be very safety oriented and must operate with the highest regard for the safety and wellbeing of coworkers and the general public.

· Ability to work outdoors in all types of inclement weather.

· Strong work ethic

· Must be able to establish working relationships with employees, city officials, and the general public.

· Excellent attendance and dependability.

· Ability to work a flexible work schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays as job duties demand.

· Ability to follow work instructions from direct supervisor.

Education and Experience:

· HS Diploma or GED.

· Must have valid and current driver’s license.

· Minimum of 3-5 years of heavy equipment operation, preferably in construction, utilities, or related field.

· Prior Public Services experience is preferred, but not required.

· Working knowledge of local government is a plus.

Certifications:

· Roads Scholar certification is a plus, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to lift up to 75lbs occasionally.

· Walking, twisting, stooping, and bending on a regular basis.

· Ability to work in a noisy environment with regular exposure to heavy machinery sounds.

· Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

· Required to perform work at heights above 20ft as needed.

Compensation:

The salary range for the position is $36,689 - $56,766 annually. The candidate's starting salary will be commensurate with their experience.
