Job summary

Baltimore County is seeking a qualified Heavy Equipment Operator to maintain and support the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Utilities Pipeline Maintenance. The role involves operating tandem-axle trucks and related equipment, with responsibilities including snow plowing, equipment towing, and routine maintenance.

Applicants must have experience with tandem-axle vehicles and possess a Maryland CDL class B (or higher).

Qualifications

Job description

Pay Schedule II, Grade H17, Regular schedule: 40 hours per week. Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Utilities Pipeline Maintenance. A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below. Current and future vacancies occurring within this class may be filled from the list of eligible applicants. Under general supervision, drives tandem-axle commercial weight vehicles, tows construction equipment, and/or operates specialized equipment Drives tandem-axle trucks including dump, refuse collection packer, roll-off, water, flusher trucks, backhoe and medium size loader.

• Operates equipment on such trucks.
• Salts and plows roads during snow emergencies.

• Installs special adapters and fixtures to equipment as work requires.
• Performs preventive and routine maintenance as required on equipment and/or trucks.
• Makes minor repairs to equipment and helps mechanics with major repairs as required.

• Participates in safety related training including confined space and trench working conditions and the handling of hazardous materials

Examples of Other Duties

• Leads and instructs other workers.
• Operates less complex vehicles and equipment.
• Trains and assists in the operation of Heavy Equipment Operator level and unfamiliar Equipment Operator level equipment and vehicles.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license is required at the time of application. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class A Maryland driver's license. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Possession of a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations is required at the time of application.

All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment.

Applicants who hold a driver’s license from a state other than Maryland or Pennsylvania must submit a current copy of their driver’s license, Medical Examiner's Certificate, and driving record at the time of application. Age Requirement

Non-Maryland residents must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as standing in traffic and adverse weather.
