Job summary

Baltimore County is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Solid Waste Management. The role involves driving tandem-axle commercial vehicles and operating various heavy equipment, with duties ranging from road salting to equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license is required at time of application.
  • Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class A Maryland driver's license.
  • Medical Examiner's Certificate is required at the time of application.
  • All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Non-Maryland residents must be at least 21 years of age at appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, drives tandem-axle commercial weight vehicles, tows construction equipment, and/or operates specialized equipment.
  • Drives tandem-axle trucks including dump, refuse collection packer, roll-off, water, flusher trucks, backhoe and medium sized loader.
  • Operates equipment on such trucks.
  • Salts and plows roads during snow emergencies.
  • Tows heavy construction and other equipment.
  • Operates mechanical street sweeper to clean streets and gutters.
  • Installs special adapters and fixtures to equipment as work requires.
  • Performs preventive and routine maintenance as required on equipment and/or trucks.
  • Keeps simple records and logs.
  • Participates in safety related training including confined space and trench working conditions and the handling of hazardous materials.
  • Leads and instructs other workers.
  • Trains and assists in the operation of Heavy Equipment Operator level and unfamiliar Equipment Operator level equipment and vehicles.

Pay Schedule II, Grade H17, Regular Schedule: 40 hours per week

Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Solid Waste Management.

  • Operates less complex vehicles and equipment.
  • Trains and assists in the operation of Heavy Equipment Operator level and unfamiliar Equipment Operator level equipment and vehicles.
  • Performs various construction tasks and other related duties as required

Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license.

PLUS

One year's experience in driving tandem-axle commercial weight vehicles or operating equipment as listed in examples of essential duties.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license is required at the time of application. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class A Maryland driver's license. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.

Possession of a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations is required at the time of application.

All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as standing in traffic and adverse weather.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation

Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education certification and fingerprint checks.
