Job summary

State of Delaware's Maintenance & Operations division seeks an Equipment Mechanic II to diagnose, repair, and service a range of road maintenance equipment, reporting to a technical supervisor.

The role requires troubleshooting, welding, and preventive maintenance; overtime during storms and emergencies; valid driver's license and CDL A/B or ability to obtain within 90 days; E-Verify; no sponsorship.

Qualifications

• Six months' experience in diagnosing and repairing routine malfunctions on light duty vehicles.
• Six months' experience performing routine engine tune-ups on light duty engines.
• Knowledge of welding and minor body repair.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventive maintenance to include lubricating, cleaning, servicing, inspecting, and testing equipment.
• Uses manual and computerized diagnostic equipment to evaluate, troubleshoot, make adjustments and diagnose equipment malfunctions.
• Repairs/replaces various parts and assemblies using mechanic power and hand tools.
• Interprets schematics and blueprints to perform inspections, diagnosis, wiring procedures, and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, ignition, lighting, warning, and injection assemblies and component systems.
• Operates computers, interprets parts, service, and automated equipment management system/ manuals to perform research, order parts, prepare records, and analyze equipment malfunctions.
• Fabricates parts, performs gas/electric welding and makes body repairs.
• Responds to road service requests and/or assists with tow trucks/wreckers.
• Conducts road test/operational checks for diagnostic purposes to determine equipment deficiencies and for post-maintenance tests.
• Cleans and cares for tools, equipment and shop facilities.
• Follows safety rules and practices, and complies with Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) standards in the performance of duties.

Summary Statement

This describes mechanic trade work at the intermediate level. Positions report to a technical superior. Assignments require a degree of evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard trade practices and general work instructions. This level diagnoses and trouble- shoots equipment malfunctions, makes determination of the problem and effectively repairs a variety of equipment, which may be unique to the agency. This position must be available to work overtime as needed, and during storm events and other emergency events on short notice and in some cases no advance notice.

Job Requirements for Equipment Mechanic II

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

• Six months' experience in diagnosing and repairing routine malfunctions on light duty vehicles such as pickup trucks, sedans or vans.

• Six months' experience in performing routine engine tune-up on light duty engines/ system components such as replacing spark plugs, engine timing, pollution control systems, and fuel systems.
• Knowledge of minor body repair.
• Knowledge of welding.
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire

As a condition of hire you must possess a valid CDL Class A or B drivers license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving) OR obtain one during the initial 90-day probationary period.

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
