Job summary

FirstEnergy Corp is seeking an experienced engineer to support relay test software, develop test routines, and train field personnel on protection equipment testing.

You will assist with maintenance documentation, regulatory compliance, and CIP field activities, while traveling across the FirstEnergy system. Strong mentoring and project management skills are valued.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
• Alternative: PE license or ABET-accredited Engineering Technology degree with advanced Electrical/Civil/Mechanical degree.
• FE Certificate preferred.
• Minimum 3 years engineering experience required.
• Experience with protection and control equipment and microprocessor-based systems is beneficial.
• Experience with SEL products and Doble testing programs is beneficial.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and work under deadlines.

Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities include:Relay Testing System supportProvide technical support to field personnel for the use of the relay test softwareDeveloping, Testing, and Issuing Relay Test RoutinesProvide training to field personnel on the use of the relay test softwareField support and oversight of maintenance activities and documentationAssisting field personnel with testing methods and documentation for protection systems, including relays, communications equipment, trip coils, DC systems, control circuitry, sensing devices, and Sudden Pressure Relays (SPRs)Perform regular substation asset field walkdowns to verify asset inventories after construction project completionCommissioning record reviewsReview and follow up on maintenance orders programmatically flagged for equipment issues or incomplete documentation.Assistance with CIP field visits for outside vendors Assist in the annual onsite CIP cyber vulnerability assessmentsProvide technical support to the substation groups for regulatory commitments, specifically NERC requirements PRC-005, PRC-012, and state requirements. Including:Assist field personnel with NERC PRC-005 documentation requirementsProvide ad-hoc training to new personnel on NERC compliance responsibilitiesAssisting in the education of others on technical subject matters and in the improvement of technical programs and process effectivenessAssist in the development or modification of FirstEnergy Substation Maintenance PracticesMaintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirementsSupporting the emergency plan through participation in assigned storm duties including hazard responding.Ability to work both independently and in unison with others including regional and plant personnel as well as other departments/sections and outside vendors.Willingness to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system including periodic overnight stays.An employee hired at the Engineer IV level will be expected to perform all of the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner. Qualifications at the Engineer III level include:

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer's (PE) License (2) a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution (3) a Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program. Electrical Engineering is preferred.A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferredMinimum of 3 (three) years of Engineering experience is required.Proficiency / comfort working with large amounts of data preferredStrong consideration will be given to those with previous experience in the design, maintenance or testing of substation equipment. Also, familiarity with the understanding, application, and communication of microprocessor-based protection and control equipment is considered beneficial. Experience with SEL products and software, Doble (Enoserv) RTS, and other Doble testing programs is also beneficial.Commitment to FirstEnergy's Safety Policies and the Accident Prevention Handbook.Understanding of FirstEnergy's Manual of Operations, preferred.Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
