We are a deep-tech semiconductor hardware startup in San Jose that designs and builds our own MOCVD growth equipment in-house, and we are currently building out an R&D cleanroom and a next-generation MOCVD platform.
We are hiring an Equipment Engineer to build, install, commission, and maintain our MOCVD systems and supporting vacuum, gas delivery, and thermal equipment. This is a hands-on role: most of your time will be on the shop floor and in the lab working directly on equipment alongside our hardware engineers. As our systems reach customer sites, you will also lead installation, startup, and service there (potential travel, 10% or less).
Responsibilities
Build and install
- Assemble and install vacuum chambers, KF/CF/ISO flanges, pumps, valves, gauges, and feedthroughs
- Build and modify gas lines using tube bending and Swagelok/VCR fittings; install mass flow controllers, regulators, and gas panels
- Install and service tube furnaces, heaters, and temperature control hardware
- Support equipment moves, facility hookups (power, exhaust, gas, water), and cleanroom installations
Maintain and troubleshoot
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on vacuum systems, gas delivery, control electronics, pumps, chillers, scrubbers, and exhaust
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and process-related equipment issues
- Keep spare parts inventory and maintenance logs
Design and fabricate
- Design and fabricate brackets, fixtures, and enclosures using CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or FreeCAD) and shop tools
- Design, wire, and test control panels, sensors, and controllers
Document, train, and support the field
- Lead on-site installation, startup, and commissioning of MOCVD systems at customer sites
- Develop installation procedures, maintenance checklists, and troubleshooting guides
- Train internal technicians and customer personnel on operation and upkeep
- Act as the technical liaison between customers and CDimension engineering, and feed field observations back into product improvement
Safety
- Follow all procedures for hazardous gases, high vacuum, high temperature, and electrical systems; keep a clean and organized workspace
Flexibility
- This is a fast-paced startup; expect to take on work outside this description as priorities change
Requirements
- Experience: 1+ years of field service or equipment engineering experience in semiconductor, vacuum, or precision instrumentation
- Hands-On Experience: Demonstrated hands-on work with hand and power tools and with vacuum, gas delivery, and control systems; enjoys assembling, taking apart, and fixing equipment
- Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Drawings and CAD: Able to read mechanical drawings, schematics, and P&IDs; basic CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or FreeCAD)
- Field Work: Able to work independently at customer sites; potential travel for installations and service visits (10% or less)
- Attention to Detail: Careful, methodical work with strong safety awareness
- Learning Mindset: Willingness to learn new deposition and semiconductor equipment on the job
- Physical: Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a cleanroom environment
- Must have valid right to work in the US
Nice to Have
- Experience servicing CVD, MOCVD, ALD, or other deposition equipment
- Helium leak detection, tube/pipe fitting, or gas panel build experience
- LabVIEW, PLC, or other equipment control platforms; basic electrical or instrumentation
- Startup or small-team experience requiring cross-functional flexibility
- Full access to a professional startup lab and workshop environment
- Direct collaboration with engineers; skill development across vacuum, gas, thermal, and electrical systems
- Opportunity to grow into a Senior Equipment Engineer role
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Paid time off
