Qualifications

Job Overview:

Complete tasks and assignments within the Public Works Department related to construction, operation, maintenance, cleaning, and control of water, wastewater collection, and treatment systems; organize and maintain tools, equipment, and materials; operate heavy and light equipment and trucks; snow removal; parks and grounds maintenance; routine monitoring and repairs; and identify and label underground public utility mains.

Responsibilities:
  1. Water treatment and analysis. Operate and maintain pumps and motors that move water through filtration systems. Monitor indicators and make adjustments as necessary.
  2. Read meters and gauges to ensure proper operation of plant equipment. Take samples and run tests to determine water quality.
  3. Install residential water and sewer services.
  4. Perform routine maintenance and repairs on pumps, electric motors, valves, and other equipment.
  5. Identify underground utilities by reading maps and prints. Use electronic detection equipment to locate and mark underground facilities. Perform light excavation when needed.
  6. Respond to animal-related complaints and assist in animal recovery.
  7. Assist with parks and grounds maintenance.
  8. Support special events (e.g., Pow Wow) with grounds maintenance, waste management, pest control, and vendor setup/teardown.
  9. Assist with snow plowing and removal.
Job Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a technical water operator program and two years of related experience, or one year of experience with additional training.
  • Class SD Wastewater Collections license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Class D Water Supply System Operator or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Class A CDL Driver's License preferred; training provided within 1 year.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to interpret safety rules, manuals, and instructions.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Industrial truck driving permit may be required.
  • Work environment involves both inside (30%) and outside (70%) settings, with exposure to hazards (10%).
  • Physical requirements include standing (50%), lifting (25%, up to 75 lbs), and various physical maneuvers (bending, crawling, etc.).
