Job summary

Black Hills Energy is hiring for a Gas Technician in Wyoming. This role safely installs and maintains control systems and automation equipment, supporting gas measurement and SCADA RTU networks across Casper, Laramie, or Rawlins. Training is provided with no prior experience required.

The position requires a strong safety mindset, basic math, and the ability to work from written and verbal instructions. Travel up to 25% and a valid driver’s license are required to succeed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • No experience required; training provided.
  • Understanding of natural gas measurement and AGA standards.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Intermediate digital literacy.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work with a team and follow supervision and schedules.
  • Commitment to safety and to company asset protection.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% and hold a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, inspects, maintains, operates, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates, and adjusts PLC control systems and SCADA equipment.
  • Performs I&M checks on control systems.
  • Maintain electrical switch gear and power distribution.
  • Install conduit, pull and terminate wiring, and test electrical systems.
  • Test and calibrate transmission meters, gauges, and transmitters.
  • Work safely around energized electrical equipment following safety procedures.
  • Oversee maintenance of facilities control and automation equipment.
  • Oversee electrical construction/maintenance by third parties.
  • Identify, report, and address safety and environmental concerns.
  • Complete documentation and record keeping in accordance with standards.

Pay Range

$32.36 - $48.41 per hour (This posting includes the full pay range for this position. Pay is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity.)

Essential Functions
  • Installs, inspects, maintains, operates, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates, and adjusts various pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, electronic, SCADA equipment and Programmable Logic (PLC) control systems and SCADA Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) equipment.
  • Performs inspection and maintenance (I&M) checks on all control systems.
  • Maintain electrical switch gear and power distribution.
  • Install conduit, pull and terminate wiring, and preform testing and troubleshooting of electrical systems.
  • Test, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate transmission meters, gauges, transmitters and related equipment.
  • Work safely around energized electrical equipment and panels while following applicable safety procedures, codes, and lockout/tagout requirements.
  • Responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of all facilities control and automation equipment as needed.
  • Oversee electrical construction and/or maintenance activities performed by third parties.
  • Identify, report, and correct safety and environmental concerns.
  • Complete all applicable documentation and record keeping.
  • Perform all work in compliance with Company Standards, procedures, regulatory and tariff requirements.
  • Demonstrate performance toward operational excellence.

What Is Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • No experience required. Training provided.
  • Understanding of and experience in natural gas measurement and AGA standards.

  • This position requires driving responsibilities. You must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company and insurer standards.
  • This role will be required to travel up to 25% of the time.
What Is Desired
  • Electrical training or equivalent knowledge is helpful.
  • Experience in safe handling practices of flammable gases, liquids and high pressure systems.
  • Knowledge of operating cost associated with the equipment in area of responsibility.
  • Ability to operate manual and powered equipment.
