Job Description

The mission of the Bureau of Immunization (BOI) is to prevent the occurrence and transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) through comprehensive immunization programs. BOI promotes immunization across the lifespan from infancy through adulthood, works to eliminate disparities in vaccination coverage through data evaluation and support of equitable vaccination services, and actively responds to VPD outbreaks to mitigate their spread and impact on communities.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Unit Chief of the Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Unit, and working with other Epidemiology and Data Informatics professionals, as well as a team of Public Health Advisors, you will be assigned tasks related to disease surveillance, data analysis, and case reporting, within a program that conducts both disease surveillance and case management for hepatitis B infected pregnant and postpartum patients and case management of their infants and other contacts.

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

Develop, evaluate, and conduct surveillance of hepatitis B infection in pregnant and post-partum women. Ensure that all reported cases are received by the PHBP Unit and stored in MAVEN, the electronic surveillance and case management system.

Confirm and submit electronic reports of perinatal hepatitis B infections to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Monitor quality of data received and update missing data by importing data from electronic laboratory reports, clinical disease reports, the NYC immunization registry and health record data.

Use SAS statistical software to clean data, perform epidemiological and statistical data analyses for surveillance reports, program evaluation, grant reports, research studies and data requests from local, state, and federal authorities.

Serve as a system administrator for maintaining and enhancing the Maven system: update database model, develop workflows and reports, backup database components, review and evaluate new features and communicate new functionality to Unit staff.

Attend related meetings and work collaboratively with staff from other Units and Bureaus.

May supervise one Clerical Associate III.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience cleaning and analyzing large datasets using SAS
  • Experience applying epidemiological methods and conducting infectious disease surveillance case investigations in public health practice
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Access, MS Excel, and SAS or equivalent
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.

To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
