The mission of Optum Epidemiology is to promote health by providing research that equals or exceeds that of the best academic institutions, and to develop tools that enable widespread use of health-care data to improve health. At Optum, our Epidemiology team conducts customized Epidemiologic research studies. We contract with clients to conduct custom studies, including observational safety studies to fulfill post-marketing regulatory commitments, comparative effectiveness research, and descriptive epidemiology/natural history of disease studies. We commonly utilize existing administrative claims or Electronic Health Records databases as the source of our study populations, supplemented by secondary sources (e.g., medical records and surveys). Our client services often include the development of a protocol, execution of analytic tasks and interpretation of results that culminate in delivery of a high-quality report to our clients and/or regulatory agencies.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Epidemiologist III has the primary responsibility for the scientific direction and day-to-day management of post-approval safety studies using administrative claims and/or electronic health records. Specifically, the Epidemiologist will:

  • Provide scientific direction and guide project execution in collaboration with the project manager
  • Prepare analytic and management plans in collaboration with research analysts
  • Prepare protocols, deliverables, reports
  • Seek appropriate review of deliverables
  • Direct client contact with or without senior scientist in collaboration with the project manager
  • Direct presentation of results to clients with or without project team or senior scientist
  • Direct or participate in business development
  • Direct proposal writing effort
  • Serve as internal reviewer and mentor to Epidemiologists I & II
  • Review deliverables/reports by other Epidemiologists prior to submission

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (e.g., PhD, ScD, PharmD, MD)
  • 5+ years of related research experience
  • 5+ years of study design, research methodology, and statistical analysis
  • 5+ years of experience meeting timelines and ability to manage multiple competing priorities
  • Knowledge of study design, research methodology, and statistical analysis
  • Proven history of meeting timelines and ability to manage multiple competing priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Epidemiology, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience working with and analyzing large administrative healthcare databases, such as administrative claims data and/or electronic health records
  • 5+ years of experience applying advanced pharmacoepidemiologic methods, such as propensity score-based approaches
  • 3+ years of experience with SAS or similar statistical software
  • 3+ years with direct client contact
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as leader of a team
  • Demonstrated solid work ethic and demonstrated organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility with changes in responsibilities and duties

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $110,200 to $188,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
