Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council Inc. seeks an entry-level epidemiologist to carry out surveillance, analysis, and interpretation of dementia and brain health data.
You will work under the Dementia Program Director and senior epidemiologists, applying epidemiologic methods to identify prevalence and risk factors across Tribal populations. The role requires travel and may be based in Green Bay, Madison, or Grand Rapids.
Serve as an entry-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries, with a primary program focus on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, brain health, healthy aging, caregiver needs, and dementia risk reduction. Working as a team member under the direction of the Dementia Program Director and with technical guidance from Senior Epidemiologists, conduct routine epidemiologic functions; develop, analyze, and interpret dementia-related data; provide technical assistance to Tribal Nations; and provide training on epidemiologic principles and the appropriate use of dementia and public health data. Support the development of culturally responsive data products that help Tribal partners understand dementia burden, disparities, risk and protective factors, service needs, and program outcomes. Attendance as scheduled is an essential function of this position. Travel is required. This position can be in our Green Bay, Wisconsin office, Madison, Wisconsin office or Grand Rapids, Michigan office. This position is not a remote position.
Reports directly to the Dementia Program Director and receives technical epidemiology guidance from the Senior Epidemiologist. Works independently with acquired experience. The supervisor assigns projects, establishes deadlines, and provides assistance and guidance. Planning, coordination, analytic methods, data interpretation, disclosure review, and execution of work are reviewed for scientific appropriateness, accuracy, consistency, cultural responsiveness, timeliness, and overall presentation and outcome. Daily contact with assigned Brain Health Program team members and regular contact with GLITEC Epidemiology Center staff. Frequent contact with Tribal Nations, Tribal Health Departments, clinics, senior and community programs, caregivers, community members, and employees throughout the organization to obtain, interpret, and provide relevant information. Ongoing contact with federal and state agencies, Indian Health Service, health-care organizations, academic partners, and other epidemiologists for data acquisition, technical consultation, and coordination of dementia and public health initiatives.
Required: Master’s degree in public health with an emphasis in epidemiology, biostatistics, analysis and assessment, or a closely related field. Knowledge of epidemiologic study design, surveillance, descriptive and inferential statistics, data management, quality assurance, evaluation, data visualization, and responsible interpretation of findings. Ability to work with sensitive health information and understand the importance of Tribal approvals, Tribal data sovereignty, privacy, small-number concerns, and limitations of dementia-related data. Basic knowledge of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, dementia risk and protective factors, caregiving, healthy aging, and public health approaches to dementia. Preferred: Experience working with American Indian and Alaska Native people, Tribal governments, Tribal organizations, Tribal Epidemiology Centers, Tribal Health Departments, and/or not-for-profit agencies. Experience analyzing dementia, cognitive health, aging, caregiving, chronic disease, health-care utilization, mortality, or program-evaluation data. Familiarity with data sources relevant to dementia surveillance and with statistical software such as SAS, R, Stata, Epi Info, or comparable applications. Ability to work independently and as a program team member. Individuals must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem-solving skills; effective time management; self-motivation; ability to work effectively under pressure; ability to build positive relationships with internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people; and the ability to speak before groups. An individual must be able to address a wide range of intellectual and practical problems, apply statistical calculations appropriately, document and explain analytic methods, interpret findings cautiously, and compose complex business and technical correspondence, reports, data briefs, evaluation summaries, and health profiles. Requires a high level of confidentiality. Must possess a valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation with adequate insurance and the ability to travel.
This is a full-time exempt position based on skills and experience, with a pay range of $55,000 - $60,000 annually, depending on years of experience, relevant experience, education and populations you have worked with.
