Job summary

Talent Portus in Nashville, TN is seeking an experienced Epidemiologist to support nonfatal overdose surveillance under OD2A-S grant. The role focuses on syndromic surveillance using ESSENCE, developing case definitions, and integrating data across systems.

You will produce automated monthly reports, perform epidemiologic analyses, and translate findings for stakeholders. This is a contract role with a hybrid work arrangement and an onsite requirement of 1 day per week in Nashville.

Qualifications

  • Experience as an Epidemiologist or in a closely related public health analytics role.
  • Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, or related field preferred.
  • Experience conducting epidemiologic analyses using large administrative or surveillance datasets.
  • Experience with SAS, SQL, R, Tableau or similar analytics/visualization tools.
  • Experience with public health surveillance or syndromic surveillance preferred.
  • Overdose surveillance experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience with study design, statistical analysis, data quality assessment, and interpretation of public health data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and presenting analytical findings.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop expertise in ESSENCE and support statewide nonfatal overdose surveillance.
  • Develop, evaluate, and validate surveillance definitions for emerging substances and drug classes.
  • Support surveillance involving emerging substances such as medetomidine, vape shop products, cannabis, and other drug classes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to integrate ESSENCE data with REDCap and other surveillance systems.
  • Train team members on ESSENCE workflows, surveillance definitions, and data management processes.
  • Develop and maintain standardized monthly overdose burden reports.
  • Evaluate surveillance data sources for routine reporting and analysis.
  • Design and maintain automated reporting tools for monthly trend reports.
  • Perform data quality assurance to ensure completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Analyze surveillance and administrative datasets to identify trends and patterns.
  • Present surveillance findings and provide technical guidance to stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports and communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

HIRING: EPIDEMIOLOGIST NONFATAL OVERDOSE SURVEILLANCE
  • Position: Epidemiologist

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking an experienced Epidemiologist to support nonfatal overdose surveillance activities under the CDC Overdose Data to Action in States (OD2A-S) grant.

The Epidemiologist will support statewide overdose surveillance, with a strong focus on syndromic surveillance using ESSENCE. The role will involve evaluating and developing overdose case definitions for emerging substances, integrating surveillance data across systems, developing automated reporting tools, performing epidemiologic analyses, and translating findings into actionable public health insights.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

The ideal candidate will have a strong epidemiology/public health analytics background with experience working with large surveillance datasets. Candidates with hands-on experience in ESSENCE, syndromic surveillance, overdose surveillance, SAS, SQL, R, Tableau, data visualization, and automated reporting will be especially well suited.
