Environmental Waste Specialist

Reports to: Manager of HSE Work Location: Clear Lake, SD

Functional Area: HSE Required Travel: Minimal

Exempt Status: Non-Exempt Salary Range: DOE

Schedule: 36/4

Job Summary: The Environmental Waste Specialist disposes hazardous waste resulting from production processes; position may also assist with preparing and arranging shipments of materials off site.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Responsible for hazardous waste management functions, including the treatment and deactivation of energetic hazardous wastes. Performs physical waste activities including moving packaged waste from buildings to bunkers for storage and disposing of waste generated from production processes. Additional activities include moving containers, assisting with non-explosive offsite shipments, collecting samples, etc.
  • Assists with loading/unloading of hazardous waste and non-hazardous waste.
  • Assists with maintaining Hazardous Waste electronic and paper documentation including shipment documentation to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares hazardous waste manifest and land disposal restriction notifications.
  • Develops and presents environmental compliance training.
  • Performs housekeeping duties associated with hazardous waste activities.
  • Performs various inspections and audits (e.g., fire extinguishers, bunkers, emergency response equipment) as well as plant walk-thru (as assigned).
  • Drives company vehicle and operates forklift as required.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned; assists with other tasks and duties in HSE as needed, for example when employees are on leave or vacation.
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States (ITAR restrictions).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to work at this facility.
  • Must be eligible to possess explosives under the Safe Explosives Act of 2003 (as amended) as required by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for all employees of Tech Ord.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); experience and/or training related to explosives handling safety or hazardous waste handling preferred. Proficiency with Word and Excel computer applications, as well as ability to become proficient in our internal Document Control system (SharePoint) and internal Enterprise Resource Management platform system (XRM).
  • Successful completion of RCRA 40 hour Hazardous Waste Regulations within 6 months of hire per regulations, and DOT Hazmat Ground Shipper Training within 90 days of hire per regulations.
  • Complete manifest training via D.O.T. or RCRA upon hire.
  • Ability to communicate and document effectively in English.
  • Ability to multi-task in support of end-result/goal.
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to become forklift certified upon hire.
  • Function specific RCRA training upon hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a driver’s license upon hire.

  • Minimal lifting of 10 pounds is required. Occasional requirement to move by pushing, pulling or lifting up to 50 pounds and rarely lifting 50 pounds or greater with assistance.
  • Occasional bending, squatting or kneeling is required.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus when viewing a computer monitor.
  • Occasional computer use is required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and explosives.
  • Ear protection is required as identified throughout the facility.
  • Where required employees must wear a minimum of 50% cotton clothing including undergarments to mitigate electrostatic discharge (ESD). Employees must also wear company issued safety footwear.
