Job description

ABOUT THE JOB:

This position involves working in a multi-disciplinary environment on the analysis and testing of optomechanical and electronic systems. We are interested in candidates that are excited to work on new projects from conceptualization through production and are passionate about developing validated and correlated models to support the rapid prototyping of cutting edge systems. This role is looking for an engineer that has structural analysis experience and some environmental test experience.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Execute hand calculations, spreadsheet, and MATLAB/Python first-order models to inform path forward before jumping into detailed analysis. Use first principles as a basis for every decision and discern the right level of analysis to apply based on state of hardware design and program goals
  • Develop appropriate computational models and simulations to predict stress distribution, deformation, fracture, and fatigue life as needed to meet design schedules. Generate, maintain, and correlate integrated FEMs for imaging platforms.
  • Develop internal tools and prepare technical reports to present findings to internal teams, management, and external customers
  • Perform hands on testing to validate analytical models; Additional testing to support the test team will be required that are outside of the structural / dynamic realm which may include full qualification campaigns
  • Operate thermal chambers, shakers, data acquisition systems and structural test equipment as needed to satisfy test objectives
  • Lead test design reviews, visit vendors, define and execute hardware test plans
  • Travel to test sites as needed. This includes local and out of state travel which could be a week or two at a time
  • Stay current with advancements in stress analysis techniques, materials technology, and industry standards
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional experience in structural analysis & environmental test
  • Experience with performing stress, strain, fatigue and fracture analysis
  • Understanding of statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and materials properties
  • General knowledge of climatic and dynamic testing
  • General knowledge of environmental test instrumentation and data acquisition
  • Good at working independently and with various teams and key stakeholders
  • Highly motivated, self-starting, results oriented, and capable of working in a dynamic environment
  • Must be capable of lifting at least 50 lbs for short periods of time
  • Must be comfortable with hands on work and working in noisy environments including outdoors
  • Minimum BS in an engineering discipline
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiar with NASTRAN finite element solver as well as pre and post processors such as Femap, Vibrata, Hypermesh, etc.
  • Performed structural, thermal, and optical performance (STOP) models for high performance imaging systems
  • Performed Environmental testing at previous job(s) for military and/or commercial industry
  • Knowledge and test execution per MIL-STD-810 and/or MIL-STD-461
  • Knowledge of Shock & Vibration testing including fixture design and control strategies
  • Good knowledge of various instrumentation and data acquisition
  • Knowledge on how to run and operate shakers, chambers, and other major test apparatus
  • CAD skills (any platform) and ability to make high quality engineering drawings that meet common industry standards
