This temporary position is located in Morehead City, NC - Carteret County.

Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $16.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).

This temporary position will be assigned to the Department of Environmental Quality. This position is located at 3441 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.

The Recreational Port Agent conducts surveys of marine recreational anglers to obtain information about their fishing effort, catch and participation in marine recreational saltwater fishing as part of the Marine Recreational Information Program’s Access Point Angler Intercept Survey. The Recreational Port Agent also collects other demographic, social and economic statistics from angler trips. These data are collected and uploaded to a central database using an electronic tablet software application. The Recreational Port Agent will organize, code, and compile data for analysis. The Recreational Port Agent works with minimum supervision and is responsible for following a set schedule according to program procedures. This position is responsible for handling face to face interactions in the field. Confident customer service skills are a plus. Accurate fish identification to the species level is required. At-sea, ride-along biological sampling on head boats is required. Other requirements for this position include: meeting deadlines; weekend work; night work to monitor nighttime recreational fishing; outdoor work in inclement weather; significant in-state travel to assigned fishing sites; and having the ability to swim.

Recruitment Standards
  • Must demonstrate working knowledge in the environmental area of assignment.
  • Must be able to observe, monitor, collect and record data according to established methods.
  • Must administer an environmental program; manage resources; monitor activities and assess environmental risks; must be able to support environmental work by assisting in experiments and/or tests following established work processes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of the environmental field to which assigned.
  • Working knowledge of the state and/or federal rules and regulations pertaining to the area of assignment.
  • Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, procedures and methods necessary to carry out assigned functions.
  • Ability to prepare written reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in written and oral form.
  • Ability to handle with tact and consistency the diversity of public contacts demanded by work.

Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
