Qualifications

  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to obtain within one month of hire.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and outdoors under varying weather and site conditions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with supervisors, coworkers, and Navy/Marine Corps customers.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a company vehicle to assigned project sites.
  • Collect and document environmental samples at drinking water, wastewater treatment, and hazardous waste facilities.
  • Enter sampling information and related documentation into the sample-tracking database accurately and promptly.
  • Follow established sampling procedures, quality-control requirements, and chain-of-custody protocols.
  • Provide regular work-status updates and communicate safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Comply with health and safety requirements of APTIM, clients, and sites.
  • Maintain sampling equipment, records, and vehicles in safe condition.
  • Work independently in outdoor environments while maintaining professional communication with APTIM leadership and Navy/Marine Corps customers.
  • Perform other environmental compliance and field-support duties as assigned.

Job description

APTIM is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Environmental Technician to support environmental compliance projects at U.S. Navy and Marine Corps facilities throughout San Diego County. The ideal candidate is a collaborative team member who can also work independently in field environments, follow established procedures, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with supervisors and customers.

Approximately 90% of the work will be performed outdoors under varying and occasionally challenging environmental conditions. The remaining 10% will be performed at the project service center located at M9 on Naval Air Station North Island. Occasional out-of-town and overnight travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Drive a company vehicle to assigned project sites.
  • Collect and document environmental compliance samples at drinking water, wastewater treatment, and hazardous waste facilities.
  • Enter sampling information and related documentation into the sample-tracking database accurately and promptly.
  • Follow established sampling procedures, quality-control requirements, and chain-of-custody protocols.
  • Provide regular work-status updates and immediately communicate changing site conditions, safety concerns, or other issues to the supervisor.
  • Comply with all APTIM, client, and site-specific health and safety requirements.
  • Maintain sampling equipment, supplies, records, and company vehicles in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Work independently in outdoor environments while maintaining professional communication with APTIM leadership and Navy and Marine Corps customers.
  • Perform other environmental compliance and field-support duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship required due to federal client and site-access requirements.
  • Ability to successfully complete a seven-year Federal Bureau of Investigation background check.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to complete the training within one month of hire.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and outdoors under varying weather and site conditions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with supervisors, coworkers, and Navy and Marine Corps customers.
  • Working knowledge of commonly used environmental concepts, practices, and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience collecting environmental samples.
  • Experience supporting drinking water, wastewater, hazardous waste, or environmental compliance programs.
  • Experience conducting asbestos inspections or supporting asbestos-related field activities.
  • Previous experience working at military installations or other federal facilities.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay range for this position is$26.64 per hour. Compensation depends on several factors including: experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
