Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking an Environmental Technician II (S) to support stewardship of conservation properties and easements. This position involves field work, GPS site evaluations, and coordination with the Stewardship Program across North Carolina.

Regular in-state travel, occasional overnight travel, and arduous field work are required. A two-year background in environmental or natural resources management with an associate's degree is required,

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences and two years of experience in environmental or natural resources management work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Description of Work

The DEQ Stewardship Program works to ensure that conservation properties and easements held by the State of North Carolina are managed to protect water quality, wildlife habitat, and provide open space. The Environmental Technician will assist with the stewardship and management of conservation properties and easements. Regular in-state travel, occasional overnight travel, and arduous field work are required of the occupant of this position.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment Range: $37,377.00 - $51,392.00

Facilities, Health, and Safety Division

DEQ Facilities Health and Safety Division provides support to DEQ's divisions at multiple sites across the state that includes: Property management for major buildings at Green Square, Archdale, Reedy Creek Road Complex, and dotted line responsibility for all Division of Marine Fisheries facilities; real property leases and sub-leases throughout the state, (34 sites, 850,000 sq. ft.) facility related contracts,DOTStickets, office relocations, Motor Fleet and Department owned vehicles, boats, motors, trailers, planes, drones, mobile devices, security, parking, and insurance. The Division is responsible for all aspects of DEQ's Capital Project Planning and Management, DEQ's Safety Program, and the Stewardship of over 560 properties and easements protecting over 27,000 acres of conservation lands.

The DEQ Stewardship Program works to ensure that conservation properties and easements held by the State of North Carolina are managed to protect water quality, wildlife habitat, and provide open space. The program was created with the enactment of the North Carolina Conservation Easements Program(N.C.G.S. 113A-230)and the Conservation Grant Fund(N.C.G.S. 113A-232). The Stewardship Program is responsible for the stewardship of easements and lands that have been acquired as compensatory mitigation by the Division of Mitigation Services (DMS) and individual permit holders. Program activities include monitoring, study, enforcement, and site-management activities for the purposes of protecting the ecological integrity of these conservation properties.

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays.
