Description

Are you a motivated leader in the environmental industry with a desire to impact future generations? If so, the Environment and Climate Division at The Montgomery County Planning Department is where you want to be! We are currently seeking an experienced, dynamic, and innovative Environmental Regulatory Supervisor. The ideal candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, expert knowledge in environmental regulations and code, and the ability to successfully lead a team. This position offers a unique opportunity to impact the environmental health and climate resilience of the county.

The selected candidate should have significant experience in environmental planning, forest conservation, and climate resilience; the ability to cultivate and nurture a cohesive team; lead complex projects; communicate effectively with staff, community members, and officials; and develop and implement a vision. The candidate must also be creative in integrating best environmental regulatory practices while analyzing Forest Conservation, Site, and Preliminary Plans. Occasionally, the Supervisor will present to The Montgomery County Planning Board, requiring strong public speaking skills.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Manage the review of environmental applications and oversee staff progress. Keep staff informed of policies and procedures; establish work goals; set standards; train staff; plan, schedule, assign, and review work.
  • Supervise drafting reports and presentations for the Planning Board, Hearings Examiner, and County Council.
  • Provide expert knowledge of the Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations, Forest Conservation Law, and other disciplines within Montgomery County.
  • Lead projects and collaborate with diverse teams including residents, developers, planners, engineers, and officials.
  • Assist with updates to environmental laws and guidelines.
  • Present and advocate planning programs and policies to various boards and bodies.
  • Respond to inquiries from citizens, developers, and officials regarding developments, laws, and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Geography, Architecture, Parks and Recreation, Transportation, Urban Design, Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Economics, or related field.
  • Six (6) years of professional planning experience, including supervisory or project leadership roles.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, totaling ten (10) years.
  • Valid driver’s license in accordance with state and Commission rules; must be unrestricted.
