FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND CONSUMER SERVICES

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or

Six (6) months of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida; or

One (1) year of experience in environmental protection, regulation, or health; in one of the physical or natural sciences; agriculture; or engineering.

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

EDUCATIONAL NOTE: Graduates utilizing education attained in the United States to meet the minimum requirements of a position will not be appointed until verification of the applicable degree has been obtained. Foreign trained graduates utilizing a degree attained outside of the United States must provide a credential evaluation from an Approved Credential Evaluation Agency. A list of approved agencies can be viewed at Florida Department of Education.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Authorized Certification Official for Phytosanitary Certificates.

This position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to Florida statutes and administrative code provisions.

Occasional travel, including overnight and up to two weeks during emergencies, is required.

NOTES:

Successful candidates must pass a background screening, including fingerprinting.

JOB DUTIES:

This professional position is responsible for the protection, certification, and regulation of native and cultivated flora in Florida. It involves conducting site inspections, detecting plant pests and pathogens, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Conducts field diagnostics, sample collection, and regulatory actions. Monitors plant pests and enforces laws regarding plant health and safety.

Maintains nursery inventories, issues certifications, and participates in special programs like pest eradication and surveys.

Handles consumer complaints, maintains records, and reports on activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of plant inspection techniques and treatments.
  • Ability to detect pests, interpret regulations, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to operate computers and conduct inspections in various environmental conditions.
