Introduction / Overview
The Public Works Department is responsible for the treatment and distribution of drinking water; the collection, reclamation, and reuse of wastewater; compliance with all environmental regulations related to water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste; and management of the City's facilities and fleet.
The City operates a Water Treatment Plant, Water Reclamation Facility, and Corporation Yard. The Water Reclamation Facility processes wastewater for discharge or recycled water production. Environmental Services is housed at the Water Reclamation Facility.
The Position

Qualifications
American Canyon is recruiting for a vacancy in the Environmental Services Division. The position may be filled at any level of the flexibly staffed classification depending on the qualifications of the applicants:
Cost of living increases of 2%-5% will be implemented in July 2025 and 2026, per the MOU.
The typical work schedule is 40 hours per week in person with extensive field work. Adjustments may be available after the probation period.
Under supervision, Environmental Specialists perform professional analytical and specialized work in environmental programs such as sustainability, waste management, water supply, and conservation.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a flexibly staffed class series. Advancement depends on meeting qualifications, demonstrating ability, and certification requirements. Entry is typically at the I level, with progression to II and III based on experience and performance.
Environmental Specialist I handles routine assignments; II performs full journey-level duties; III handles complex programs and may lead others.

Qualifications
The candidate should have resourcefulness, initiative, problem-solving skills, and the ability to interpret regulations, maintain records, and develop positive relationships. Knowledge in laws, water properties, quality control, conservation practices, and software is essential.

Minimum Qualifications
Combination of experience and education, including college courses or degrees in sciences, environmental studies, or related fields. Specific experience varies by level, from two years for I to five years for III.

Additional Information
Requires a valid California driver’s license, physical ability to perform outdoor/indoor tasks, and availability for emergency response and after-hours work.
