Job description

GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist with experience in Permitting and Field Compliance to be based out of our Cranberry Township office, Pennsylvania, within our Energy Business Unit. The role offers an opportunity to deepen knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations across Pennsylvania and adjacent states.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Review and understand specifications, permits, permit conditions, and permitting modifications for air and water quality projects at the local, state, and federal level.
  • Assist with environmental reporting and record‑keeping, including preparing and reviewing periodic monitoring reports based on field observations.
  • Prepare various environmental requests such as sound studies, wetland and stream delineation reports, and erosion and sediment control plans.
  • Assist with erosion and sediment (E&S) control and stormwater plans for both site and linear construction projects.
  • Perform in‑field assistance with E&S controls on construction projects, working independently.
  • Agree to and adhere to GAI Consultants’ Health and Safety requirements and those of clients.
  • Maintain QA/QC standards and follow GAI’s Quality Management System procedures.
Required Qualifications
  1. Minimum of an Associate’s (A.S.) degree in environmental or science focus.
  2. Approximately six to ten years of experience with environmental permitting, reporting, and record‑keeping for air and water quality.
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and technical writing ability.
  4. Proficiency with electronic location devices (e.g., GPS) to collect project‑tied data.
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office applications; familiarity with database, report, and form completion through MS Office, Access, SQL, and online programs.
  6. Valid driver’s license and ability to pass required vehicle‑driving screening.
  7. Flexible and willing to travel, including drives of 4–6+ hours round‑trip and occasional overnight stays.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in environmental or science focus.
  2. Ten or more years of experience in environmental permitting, reporting, and record‑keeping.
  3. Four or more years of experience in environmental field compliance and reporting.
  4. Experience with sound level studies, including modeling.
  5. Experience with Environmental Due Diligence (Phase I ESA) site assessments.
  6. Experience with Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans.
  7. Knowledge of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), NPDES regulations and permitting, and environmental agency E&S control guidelines and BMP designs.
  8. Experience working with an environmental review agency or as a consultant/owner.
  9. Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or GIS, particularly ArcGIS.
Physical Demands
  1. Walk moderate distances through unimproved terrain, utility rights‑of‑way, and remote areas.
  2. Lift up to 50 pounds.
  3. Hear and identify potential hazards during fieldwork.
  4. Successfully pass a drug screening as required.
