Job description

Environmental Specialist 1 or 2 (Fertilizer and Landscape Ordinance Compliance, Outreach, and Monitoring)

Location: Public Works Central Yard 22211 U.S. Hwy. 19 N. Clearwater, FL 33765

If you are passionate about protecting water resources in Pinellas County and enjoy a variety of work projects, consider joining the Environmental Management Division as an Environmental Specialist 1 or 2 in the Watershed Protection Section.

This is a technical position within the Department of Public Works, Division of Environmental Management. Responsibilities include conducting environmental inspections for compliance, communicating with the public on BMPs, preparing correspondence, maintaining files, and participating in water quality monitoring programs. You will also implement education and outreach programs to promote natural resource protection.

What Would You Do?
  1. Conduct field investigations for compliance with environmental codes and ordinances, recommend modifications, and document findings.
  2. Coordinate with property owners and contractors, provide guidance on BMPs, and generate compliance correspondence.
  3. Assist the public and County staff with interpreting environmental regulations and ensuring compliance with laws and ordinances.
  4. Investigate citizen complaints related to water quality and ordinance violations.
  5. Support surface water, benthic, and seagrass monitoring activities.
  6. Collect, maintain, and interpret environmental data; evaluate ecological impacts; and develop reports.
  7. Develop and deliver environmental outreach materials and presentations.
  8. Coordinate volunteer or intern activities within the division.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.
What Do You Need To Have?
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License and eligibility based on MVR evaluation.
  • Ability to work various schedules, including emergency or disaster situations.
  • Ability to swim.
Qualifications

Environmental Specialist 1: At least 5 years of experience in environmental management or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus 1 year of experience, or an equivalent combination.

Environmental Specialist 2: At least 6 years of experience or a Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years of experience, or an equivalent combination.

Highly Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of BMPs for fertilizer, turf, and irrigation.
  • Landscape maintenance certifications or training.
  • Experience with ESRI GIS and Accela Civic Platform.
