Job summary

MU Health Care is seeking an Environmental Services Technician to perform cleaning tasks in a healthcare setting with emphasis on infection prevention, safety and customer service. You will handle soiled linen and medical waste, and ensure confidentiality in sensitive environments.

Base pay is competitive for the Columbia, MO area, with a Monday–Friday shift 6:00am–2:30pm and every other weekend. This is an on-site position with comprehensive employee benefits and opportunities to grow within MU

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine cleaning tasks in patient rooms, restrooms, procedure areas, public areas, clinics, and offices according to established protocols.
  • Interacts professionally with patients, visitors, staff, and the public, using approved scripting and a service-oriented approach.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Follows all infection control guidelines, including PPE and isolation room procedures.
  • Handles soiled linen, regular waste, and medical waste per department safety standards.
  • Delivers and stocks clean linen, monitors par levels, and enters data using handheld or desktop computers.
  • Operates equipment such as vacuums and carts safely and reports maintenance or safety issues.
  • Follows safety protocols for wet floors, ladders, and cleaning equipment to prevent accidents.
  • Maintains equipment in clean, safe condition and ensures the work area passes inspection standards.
  • May assist Floor Care Technicians or support team development tasks as assigned.

  • Base Pay Range: $15.78 - $22.53 per hour, based on experience

ABOUT THE JOB

The Environmental Services Technician performs environmental services cleaning tasks in a healthcare setting with a strong emphasis on infection prevention, safety, and customer service. Completes cleaning routines in patient care areas, restrooms, procedure rooms, public areas, and ancillary spaces. Handles soiled linen and medical waste and maintains confidentiality in sensitive environments. Adheres to all infection control protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Performs routine cleaning tasks in patient rooms, procedure areas, restrooms, public areas, clinics, and offices according to established protocols.

  • May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 lbs. and occasionally move objects up to 25 lbs. or more.

This role may also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
