Job summary

Saint Joseph Mount Sterling is seeking an Environmental Services Technician to keep patient rooms and hospital areas clean and sanitized, protecting patients and staff from infectious diseases and hazards.

You will perform daily cleaning, use specialized equipment, and follow proper disposal procedures for biohazards while supporting a safe, compassionate care environment.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate with general studies and previous healthcare experience preferred.
  • High School GED General Studies and previous healthcare experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete daily occupied and discharge/transfer cleaning and disinfection of patient care areas, equipment, and other common areas.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of healthcare cleaning and disinfection principles; ensure safe chemical handling and equipment use.
  • Adhere to safety, risk management and infection control guidelines while promoting a culture of safety.
  • Participate in departmental performance improvement initiatives, including patient experience and cleanliness metrics.
  • Maintain cleaning carts, supplies, and equipment per Standard Work cart setup.
  • Remove waste and transport to disposal areas following regulatory requirements and waste streams.
  • Follow infection prevention practices including hand hygiene, PPE use, and isolation precautions.
  • Respect patient privacy requirements (HIPAA).
  • Operate and maintain EVS tools and equipment to clean and disinfect environments.
  • Assist with conference room set ups, stairwells, elevators, and curtain hanging as needed.
  • Mentor new Environmental Services Tech I staff as required.
  • Collaborate with others as part of the patient care team.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Environmental Services Technician, you'll keep our patient rooms and all areas of the hospital clean and sanitized. This protects everyone from potential illness or injury due to infectious diseases or other hazards.

Every day, you will perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, or dusting. You will also use specialized equipment and techniques to further sanitize our facility. This role requires you to learn and adhere to proper disposal techniques for biohazard materials, including bodily fluids or sharp objects. You may also refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and other supplies, as well as deliver clean linens.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for completing as assigned, daily occupied and discharge/transfer cleaning and disinfection of patient care areas, equipment, and other common areas.
  • Performs duties while demonstrating a working knowledge of the health care cleaning and disinfecting principles and requirements. Displays safe chemical use and equipment handling for all items within the healthcare environment.
  • Adheres to all organization safety, risk management and infection control guidelines and standards while promoting a culture of safety.
  • Actively participates in departmental performance improvement initiatives, including but not limited to initiatives to improve patient experience and cleanliness metrics.
  • Maintains cleaning cart(s), supplies, and equipment, as outlined in the Standard Work cart set up.
  • Removes waste and transports to the appropriate disposal area while identifying proper waste stream handling (i.e. regulated medical, recycle, solid, and hazardous) in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Follows all infection prevention practices, including but not limited to: proper cleaning and disinfection protocols, hand hygiene, standard and isolation precautions, proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Recognizes and adheres to patient privacy requirements (HIPAA).
  • Practices critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability.
  • Identify and utilize appropriate resources to ensure identified problems or concerns are followed through and resolved.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of facility safety requirements.
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate and properly maintain all EVS tools and equipment needed to clean and disinfect the environment.
  • May be asked to perform tasks according to the various facility needs, including but not limited to: conference room set ups, cleaning of stairwells and elevators, and hanging of cubicle curtains.
  • May be asked to mentor new Environmental Services Tech I employees.
  • Ability to collaborate with others as we are a part of the patient care team.
