The Environmental Services Manager is responsible for the daily leadership and operation of the facility's environmental services functions, including housekeeping, laundry, sanitation, infection-prevention practices, department staffing, supply management, and overall facility cleanliness and appearance.
This position leads Environmental Services employees, establishes daily priorities, monitors quality and productivity, manages department schedules and supplies, and conducts routine rounds to ensure resident rooms and facility areas meet established standards.
The Environmental Services Manager works closely with the Administrator, Nursing, Infection Prevention, Maintenance, and other department leaders to support resident safety, regulatory compliance, survey readiness, and an exceptional resident and family experience.
This is a hands-on leadership position. The successful candidate should be comfortable leading employees while also stepping in to support department operations when necessary.
Provide daily leadership and direction to housekeeping and laundry employees
Develop and maintain department schedules based on facility needs
Assign daily work responsibilities and monitor completion
Coordinate coverage for call-ins, vacancies, and changing operational needs
Help recruit, interview, onboard, train, and retain Environmental Services employees
Provide ongoing coaching, education, and performance feedback
Monitor employee attendance, productivity, and adherence to facility expectations
Address performance concerns in partnership with facility leadership and Human Resources
Promote teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and excellent customer service
Provide hands-on support to housekeeping and laundry operations when needed
Oversee the cleanliness and sanitation of resident rooms, bathrooms, hallways, common areas, offices, dining spaces, and other assigned facility areas
Establish and monitor daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning schedules
Conduct routine rounds throughout the facility to identify cleanliness or sanitation concerns
Ensure resident rooms are maintained in a clean, comfortable, and respectful manner
Monitor high-traffic and common areas throughout the day
Coordinate room cleaning associated with admissions, discharges, and room changes
Ensure cleaning responsibilities are completed according to established standards
Respond promptly to environmental concerns identified by residents, families, employees, or leadership
Oversee facility laundry and linen operations
Ensure resident clothing and facility linens are processed appropriately and returned timely
Maintain appropriate procedures for handling clean and soiled linen
Monitor linen availability and inventory
Help reduce lost or misplaced resident clothing and personal items
Ensure laundry areas remain clean, organized, and safe
Monitor laundry equipment and promptly communicate repair or maintenance needs
Ensure Environmental Services employees follow established infection-prevention and sanitation procedures
Maintain appropriate cleaning and disinfecting practices throughout the facility
Ensure employees understand appropriate use of cleaning products, disinfectants, and personal protective equipment
Maintain appropriate procedures for handling potentially contaminated materials, waste, and soiled linen
Work collaboratively with Infection Prevention and Nursing leadership regarding enhanced cleaning needs
Coordinate environmental cleaning during outbreaks or other infection-control situations
Monitor hand hygiene, PPE use, and other applicable infection-prevention practices within the department
Maintain appropriate Safety Data Sheet information and chemical-handling procedures
Ensure chemicals and cleaning supplies are appropriately labeled, stored, and secured
Maintain resident rooms and common areas in a manner that promotes comfort, dignity, and quality of life
Treat residents and their personal belongings with care and respect
Respond professionally to resident and family questions or environmental concerns
Maintain appropriate privacy and confidentiality while working in resident areas
Encourage Environmental Services employees to build positive and respectful relationships with residents
Follow up on housekeeping or laundry concerns to ensure appropriate resolution
Promote a welcoming environment for residents, families, employees, and visitors
Monitor housekeeping, laundry, chemical, linen, and departmental supply inventory
Maintain appropriate par levels and order supplies based on facility needs
Promote responsible use of supplies and minimize unnecessary waste
Monitor department expenses and operate within established budget expectations
Ensure cleaning products and equipment are used appropriately
Coordinate equipment repair or replacement needs with appropriate facility leadership
Maintain organized and secure storage areas
Previous supervisory or management experience strongly preferred
Skilled nursing, long-term care, senior living, hospital, or healthcare Environmental Services experience preferred
Knowledge of housekeeping, laundry, sanitation, and infection-prevention practices
Strong leadership and employee-management skills
Ability to organize department schedules, assignments, and daily priorities
Strong attention to cleanliness, safety, organization, and detail
Ability to identify concerns and ensure timely follow-through
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment
