Job summary

The Town of Wrightsville Beach is seeking an Environmental Services Maintenance Technician to collect litter, clear storm drains, and keep public accesses and beach strand safe. You will follow routes provided by Environmental Services and Stormwater supervisors.

This non-exempt position requires knowledge of safety rules, ability to lead workers when needed, and willingness to work in all weather conditions, including storms.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid NC driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.
• Know hazards and OSHA safety requirements.
• Ability to lead environmental services workers when needed.
• Ability to prepare detailed records and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

• Remove sand from public parking areas and access points.

Job description

I. General Statement of Duties

Perform duties including collecting litter in the town and on the beach strand. This position also keeps storm drains clear of debris as well as public accesses providing safe passage to the beach for the Environmental Services Division of the Public Works Department.

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities

• A. Remove litter from public access areas, streets, beach accesses and beach strand according to the litter route provided by WBPW Environmental Services and Stormwater supervisor.
• B. Remove sand from public parking areas, and public access areas.
• C. Ensure all storm drains are clear of debris.
• D. Pickup town recycle receptacles.
• E. Serves as backup team leader as needed.
• F. Performs other duties as assigned.
• G. Be available to assist during storms or other hazardous conditions.

III. Controls

The Environmental Services Maintenance Technician works under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor. This position is non-exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Requirements

IV. Physical Requirements or Special Working Conditions

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and perform repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform manual work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.

Must possess the visual acuity to operate motorized equipment and distinguish traffic patterns to avoid injury to self and others.

Ability and willingness to work in all types of weather conditions.

V. Qualifications and Experience

• A. Knowledge of the hazards of the work required, and OSHA safety requirements.
• B. Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations regarding the operation of town vehicles and equipment. This includes but is not limited to leaf blowers, lawn mowers, weed eaters and/or chain saws.
• C. Ability to prepare detailed electronic or written records.
• D. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• E. Ability to lead environmental services workers when needed.

VI. Educations and Certifications

• A. Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• B. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Valid commercial drivers license preferred, but not required.
