Position Summary
The Environmental Service Aide is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the hospital’s facilities and performs a variety of cleaning techniques in support of a sanitary, safe, and attractive healthcare environment for patients, residents and staff.
Position Qualifications
- Must be a high school graduate or have a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- One to three (1-3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Basic knowledge of a variety of cleaning techniques in a commercial setting.
- Basic knowledge of commercial housekeeping equipment and its usage.
- Basic mathematical concepts for proper measuring of cleaning agents.

Specific Competencies:
- Responsible for clean work station and equipment; maintains cleanliness of Environmental Services housekeeping closets and linen closet; stocks incoming laundry in linen areas.
- Ensures all assigned areas are clean, sanitary, and aseptic by scouring, scrubbing, mopping, polishing, using germicides, dusting and vacuuming.
- Cleans and disinfects floors; handles emergency spills; reports hazardous situations immediately.
- Keeps walls, doors, furniture, fixtures and ceilings clean by washing, dusting, spot cleaning, disinfecting, deodorizing, etc.
- Removes dirt, dust, grease, film from equipment and surfaces using appropriate cleaning and disinfecting solutions.
- Daily cleaning of patient rooms, bathrooms, and patient care areas.
- Daily cleaning of public restrooms, common areas, and staff dining rooms.
- Cleans SNF Residents’ dining room per occurrence procedures; cleans clinical areas and procedure rooms per hospital procedures; cleans patient bath and shower rooms per procedures.
- Cleans isolation rooms using established procedures.
- Gathers, lifts, and transports trash and soiled linen; handles hazardous waste following Infection Control Policies and Procedures.
- Monitors cleaning equipment and reports irregularities to Supervisor; uses supplies appropriately and reports inventory levels; prepares requisition forms for supplies.
- Replenishes towels, linens, and restroom supplies in all areas as needed.
- Moves furniture and equipment as required; reads and understands manuals and MSDS for proper usage.
- Maintains a culture of high safety standards and quality; assists in orientation of new personnel in the Environmental Services Department.
- Performs duties in a manner that optimizes patient safety; interacts effectively with patients and health team members; introduces self to patients, families and visitors.
- Demonstrates knowledge to communicate, educate, and provide a therapeutic and safe environment for age-specific groups; maintains age-specific precautions at all times.
- Respects diversity and addresses the needs of patients and visitors within the scope of this job.
- Maintains confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.

Working Conditions
- Willingness to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary.

Physical Requirements
- Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks and moves intermittently during working hours.
- Able to lift 30 lbs.
