Job summary

Apex Companies, LLC is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our Midlothian, VA team. The role focuses on Phase I and II ESAs, sampling, and reporting, with about 50% field work and travel within Virginia.

You will support environmental projects, with mentorship to grow technical skills. The position requires a geology/environmental science background and strong writing/communication abilities, plus willingness to travel and work in the field.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related field.
  • Experience in environmental field sampling, data collection, or related environmental discipline.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Strong safety awareness and understanding of safe work practices.
  • Experience with data management and report preparation.
  • Ability to edit Phase I and Phase II ESAs (preferred).
  • Familiarity with wetlands, endangered species, natural resources, or GIS (a plus).
  • Light construction experience or hands-on field skills (a plus).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental field work and collect soil, water, air, and/or building material samples.
  • Support Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Assist with asbestos surveys and monitoring and industrial hygiene-related work.
  • Provide support for natural resource projects, including wetlands and threatened and endangered species surveys.
  • Assist with erosion and sediment control activities as needed.
  • Utilize GIS for environmental and natural resource projects.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret environmental data.
  • Assist with report preparation, including inputting and organizing data within report templates.
  • Assist with editing and preparing environmental reports. Respond to environmental emergencies and participate in an on-call rotation as needed.
  • Travel to project sites throughout Virginia, including overnight travel.
  • Follow all company and project-specific health and safety procedures.
  • Actively develop your technical skills and career through hands-on project experience and mentorship.

Apex Companies is looking for anEnvironmental Scientist to join our team in Midlothian, VA. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career environmental professional looking to build hands‑on field experience while learning from an experienced team.

This position will support a variety of environmental projects throughout Virginia, with a strong focus on Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, environmental sampling, reporting, and other environmental services. The role is expected to 50% or more field-based, with up to 50% travel depending on project needs. Some weeks may involve field work every day. This would include travel to locations out of town.

Your Responsibilities

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.
  • Experience in environmental field sampling, data collection, or a related environmental discipline.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities.

  • A valid driver's license, good driving history, and reliable transportation are required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%, including drives of approximately two hours to project sites and overnight travel.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is preferred, but not required.
