Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky is seeking an Environmental Scientist III to support the Division of Mine Reclamation and Enforcement. The role focuses on surface effects of coal mining, regulatory oversight, and public-facing technical guidance.

Work includes inspections, tracking compliance, and contributing to environmental policy development. The position requires travel statewide with the main office in Franklin County.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in natural, biological or physical science or degree with 20 sem. hours in such sciences.
• Three years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or related area.
• Year-for-year substitution allowed for graduate study in natural, biological or physical science.
• Year-for-year substitution allowed for experience in natural resources, enginering, or related area.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee inspections of surface effects of coal mining operations.
• Issue non-compliance and cessation orders and process mine site evaluations.
• Respond to complaints and investigate to determine regulatory compliance.
• Attend hearings and provide expert testimony in legal proceedings.
• Attend trainings as required.
