Introduction

The DNREC – Compliance and Permitting Section regulates underground and aboveground storage tanks to ensure the safe storage of hazardous substances and petroleum products. The Tanks Compliance Branch conducts inspections, monitors compliance, and enforces regulations to protect public health and the environment.

Summary Statement

This position conducts compliance assessments of regulated underground storage tanks (USTs) and vapor recovery facilities, oversees UST installations, removals, and retrofits, and ensures documentation is entered into the DEN-UST system. Working under general supervision as an advanced-level Environmental Scientist, the incumbent performs field inspections, analyzes data, reviews site assessment reports, and prepares technical reports. The role includes outreach, coordination with regulatory agencies, and helping to resolve compliance issues. The position also supports enforcement efforts by identifying non-compliant facilities, tracking violations, and recommending corrective actions, while contributing to program development and regulatory review.

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS For Environmental Scientist III

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  • Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  • Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Six months experience in technical report writing.
