Environmental Scientist II – Fairfax, Virginia

Dewberry is currently seeking an Environmental Scientist II for our Fairfax, Virginia office. This full-time opening will provide the applicant with the opportunity to work as part of a growing team in all facets of environmental services including wetland science, regulatory permitting, environmental compliance, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation. Typical projects involve private, locality, state, and federal agency clients in the transportation market and environmental permitting for land development projects. Tasks include field investigations (wetland delineation, stream assessments, tree surveys, Phase I ESAs, and compliance inspections); environmental inventories and constraints analysis supported by database reviews; CWA permitting; NEPA documentation; and agency coordination. Responsibilities
  • Must be willing/able to perform field work, previous field work experience preferred
  • Coordinate and lead wetland delineations, stream assessments, tree surveys, and Phase I ESAs
  • Prepare delineation reports, functional assessments, Jurisdictional Determinations (JD) requests, Perennial Flow Determinations (PFD), Water Quality Impact Assessments (WQIA), and compliance/monitoring reports
  • Assist with the preparation of permit applications for Clean Water Act 404/401 permits to impact jurisdictional features
  • Assist with the preparation of Registration Statements for CWA 402 permits to commence land disturbance and prepare Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
  • Complete database reviews and background research to support the NEPA document development process and assist in the preparation of NEPA documentation
  • Conduct Threatened and Endangered (T&E) species inventories and database reviews to prepare Section 7 Project Review Packages and coordinate Time of Year Restrictions
  • Conduct cultural and historic resources database reviews to prepare Section 106 technical reports
  • Conduct permit and NEPA compliance monitoring during construction
  • Jobs and locations may require overnight travel and the ability to walk over uneven terrain while carrying heavy equipment
Required Skills & Required Experience
  • 2+ years of applicable experience
  • B.S. in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, Geology, or a related field
  • Wetland Professional in Training (WPIT), Professional Wetland Delineator (PWD), Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS), Virginia State Waters Delineator (VSWD), ISA Certified Arborist, or similar certification is preferred
  • Experience with ArcGIS PRO, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation is preferred
  • Experience conducting wetland delineations and preparing delineation reports
  • Experience preparing Clean Water Act 404/401 permit applications and NEPA documentation
  • Experience with local, state and federal permitting agencies
  • Experience with environmental regulations, permitting, and planning
  • Ability to compose technical reports, memorandums, and other written communication
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Desire to work in a team environment

*The salary range for this position is: $64,000 - $82,000 and may vary based on experience*
