Job summary

Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey company, seeks a full-time Environmental Scientist Hazmat in Blacksburg, VA. The role supports field and office tasks on petroleum cleanup sites, brownfield assessments and due diligence, with potential overnight travel across the region.

The candidate will perform soil, groundwater and air sampling, logging borings, and assist with Phase I/II ESAs under supervision of senior professionals. Flexibility and strong writing skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Chemistry, Biology or a related field.
  • Experience in fieldwork and data interpretation with technical reporting.
  • HAZWOPER or related certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field activities including site visits, sampling and inspections with PPE.
  • Analyze field and laboratory data, prepare summaries and reports under supervision.
  • Coordinate with project managers and subject matter experts on multiple projects.

Position Overview

Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey company, is seeking a full-time entry to junior-level Technician to join our Assessment and Remediation Team in the Southwest Virginia Office. We are looking for a motivated team player that will provide field and office support on petroleum cleanup sites, brownfield assessments, roadway expansion projects, and commercial real estate transaction due diligence tasks.


Job Duties

Responsibilities will include performing field activities (e.g., site visits, sampling, inspections) while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) that will include hard hat, vest, gloves, steel-toed boots, and eye protection, and at times may require half-face or full-face respirators. Additional responsibilities will include task management, analysis and interpretation of analytical results and field-collected data, working on assignments with project managers and fellow team members, and coordinating with various subject matter experts. The ability to handle multiple project assignments with deadlines utilizing oral and written communications skills are a must.


Primary activities will include preparation of Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments; conduct soil, groundwater, air, and surface water sampling; logging soil borings, oversight of groundwater monitoring well installations, and collection of representative subsurface media samples; oversight of site redevelopment and remediation activities; and analysis and interpretation of analytical results and the preparation of summary reports, under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Professional.


Candidate will be expected to have or obtain asbestos and lead paint inspector certifications within 6-months of employment.


Project meetings, fieldwork, site visits, and professional development assignments may routinely require overnight stays throughout the region. It is estimated that this position will consist of approximately 40% office work and 60% fieldwork.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Experience with data collection, presentation, reduction, and evaluation; and writing technical reports a must. Candidate should demonstrate the ability to prepare documents that are technically and grammatically correct and fully referenced.

  • Prior field experience and excellent writing skills a plus.

  • Ability to take initiative and resolve problems with a team building mentality.

  • Ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships with WSSI personnel at all levels.

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicles.


Education and Experience Requirements:



  • A bachelor’s degree in related science (e.g., Geology, Hydrogeology, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental, etc.), Environmental Engineering, similar engineering discipline, or other closely related field.

  • Experience working with a team to plan and balance the workload of multiple projects or assignments.

  • Experience in assisting with proposal support and development is a plus.

  • HAZWOPER certification or similar vocational certifications and skill sets a plus.

  • Good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Power Point. Mapping (GIS, CAD, or similar software) experience a plus.
