Job summary

AECOM is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our team for investigations, remediation, and compliance work across New Jersey. The role blends field sampling with office-based analysis, offering opportunities for growth and exposure to diverse environmental projects.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or a related field and 2+ years of experience, plus a valid driver’s license and background checks. On-site work with travel to sites is expected.

Qualifications

  • Valid U.S. Driver's License.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must pass a client‑driven drug screening to gain site access.
  • Must pass a motor vehicle records check.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental investigations, field assessments, and multimedia sampling.
  • Develop scopes of work, cost estimates, and technical plans for environmental projects.
  • Coordinate and oversee environmental consultants during investigation and remediation activities.
  • Review technical deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collect, interpret, and analyze scientific and chemical data to support environmental decision‑making.
  • Prepare clear, defensible technical reports summarizing findings and recommendations.
  • Integrate environmental requirements into project planning with construction and design teams.
  • Communicate effectively with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and project personnel.
  • Apply federal and state environmental regulations and guidance across project tasks.
  • Maintain organized project records, documentation, and data systems.
  • Support planning and oversight of large‑scale cleanup and remediation activities.
  • Perform standard scientific work, propose analytical methods, and draw conclusions under general supervision.
  • Experience working on chemical production facilities, Superfund sites, or other complex industrial environments (preferred).

AECOM is seeking a motivated Environmental Scientist to join our growing team and support environmental investigation, remediation, and compliance projects throughout New Jersey and the surrounding region. You will conduct environmental sampling, oversee subcontractors, evaluate environmental data, prepare technical figures and reports, and collaborate with project teams to deliver high-quality results. This role combines hands‑on fieldwork with office‑based technical responsibilities, offering excellent opportunities for career development.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to travel regionally for day trips as project needs require.
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in sometimes challenging conditions, lift/carry field equipment, and travel as project needs dictate.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, colleagues, and subcontractors.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours and at varying project locations, including frequent travel within a 1–3‑hour drive of the home office and occasional travel beyond that range.
  • Strong field documentation, data analysis, and technical writing skills; proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and rapidly master new tasks.
  • Strong quality and time management.
  • Self‑starter with the ability to work independently and deliver high‑quality work with minimal supervision.
  • Solid attention to detail and thorough approach to work.
  • 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and GIS applications.
  • OSHA 30‑hour Construction (current) and other relevant safety certifications.
  • Exposure to client communications, schedule/budget tracking, or small task coordination; ability to provide on‑the‑job guidance to junior field staff.
  • Direct experience working with groundwater pump‑and‑treat systems.
