Job description

Walden Environmental Engineering is a growing, family-owned environmental consulting firm that has been solving environmental challenges across Long Island, New York City, and the Hudson Valley since 1995. We're adding an experienced Environmental Scientist to our Oyster Bay team.

Don't let the word "Engineering" in our name narrow your read on this role. Our environmental practice is built on geologists, biologists, chemists, environmental scientists, and engineers who run investigations, manage compliance programs, and lead client relationships. What matters here is your experience doing the work, not which department your degree came from.

WHO THIS IS FOR

You have 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience with Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, and you're ready to take ownership of projects rather than just execute tasks on them. You're comfortable writing a report one day and pulling groundwater samples the next, and you'd rather do both than be stuck doing only one.

If you've spent time at a large firm and want your work to actually be seen, or you're at a small shop and want a deeper bench and a real career path, we'd like to talk.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Lead and perform Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, including scoping, fieldwork, data evaluation, and report preparation
  • Support remedial investigations and remediation projects under NYSDEC oversight (Brownfield Cleanup, Spill Program, Part 375) as well as lender-driven due diligence work
  • Manage stormwater compliance programs: SWPPP development, quarterly inspections, and sampling for industrial clients
  • Prepare solid waste registrations, permit applications, and other NYSDEC / NYCDEP regulatory submissions
  • Oversee subcontractors in the field (drillers, labs, abatement contractors) and coordinate with regulators
  • Contribute to wetland delineations and ecological assessments as projects require
  • Build direct client relationships and support proposals and business development as you grow into a project management role
A STRAIGHT ANSWER ON OFFICE VS. FIELD

Candidates always ask, so here it is: plan on roughly a 50/50 split between office and field, and expect it to shift week to week. Most field days are half-days on Long Island or in the city. A full day at a site in the outer boroughs happens occasionally, not constantly.

This is not a role where you live in a truck, and it's also not a role for someone who's finished with fieldwork. We need someone who's flexible and still likes getting outside.

WHAT YOU BRING
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
  • 3 to 5 years of post-bachelor's experience in environmental consulting
  • Direct experience performing Phase I and Phase II ESAs (ASTM E1527 / E1903)
  • Field competency: soil and groundwater sampling, well installation oversight, boring logs, field screening
  • Strong technical writing; you can produce a clean, defensible report without heavy rewriting
  • Working knowledge of NYSDEC regulations and programs
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Located within commuting distance of Oyster Bay, NY, or willing to relocate
Preferred:
  • Wetland delineation experience or wetland science background (a wetland scientist who wants broader exposure is a great fit)
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER (current)
  • Professional Geologist (PG) license, Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) or progress toward one
  • Experience with NYC-specific regulatory work (NYCDEP, NYC OER)
WHY WALDEN
  • Salary of $78,000 to $95,000, based on experience and credentials
  • Full medical and dental insurance
  • Hybrid work and flexible hours; we trust our team to manage their time
  • Support for professional development, including certifications, exam prep, and continuing education
  • Direct access to senior leadership and Principals on real projects; no layers between you and the people making decisions
  • A clear path to Project Manager. We promote from within, and scientists run projects here.
  • A 30-year-old firm with the stability of an established business and the pace of a growing one
  • Team events and a culture built on accountability and mutual respect
