Job summary

Position Summary

This position assists with environmental inspections, indoor environmental quality monitoring, hazardous material management, and regulatory compliance related to asbestos, lead-based paint, and other environmental hazards.

The Environmental Safety Technician supports the District’s environmental health, safety, and regulatory compliance efforts across school facilities. This position assists with environmental inspections, indoor environmental quality monitoring, hazardous material management, and regulatory compliance related to asbestos, lead-based paint, and other environmental hazards.

The Environmental Safety Technician serves as the District’s technical resource and point of contact for environmental safety documentation and regulatory reporting related to asbestos, lead-based paint, hazardous materials, and indoor environmental quality. The position coordinates required inspections, documentation, and compliance activities while working under the direction of the Paint Foreperson and Operations leadership.

This position does not supervise staff.

Essential Functions
  • Environmental Compliance and Safety
  • Assist with the implementation and monitoring of environmental compliance programs for District facilities.
  • Inspect facilities and work areas to identify potential environmental or safety hazards.
  • Collect samples of hazardous materials such as asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, dust, gases, vapors, and other potentially hazardous materials, or coordinate sample collection with qualified vendors.
  • Assist with coordination of asbestos and lead abatement projects with District personnel, consultants, and contractors.
  • Support environmental safety audits and investigations of District building and operations.
  • Maintain records, reports, and documentation related to environmental compliance activities.
  • Assist in maintaining hazardous material inventories and waste tracking systems.
  • Respond to environmental safety concerns and assist with remediation efforts when hazardous conditions are identified.
  • Assist in maintaining emergency response plans related to environmental hazards.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations and District policies.

  • Assist with monitoring indoor air quality in District facilities.
  • Support implementation of EPA indoor air quality programs, including Tools for Schools.
  • Conduct facility inspections to identify potential contributors to poor indoor air quality.
  • Assist in responding to indoor air quality concerns or complaints from staff or students.
  • Safety and Training
  • Assist in the development and delivery of safety training programs for operations staff.
  • Conduct safety education sessions related to hazardous materials and workplace safety practices.
  • Maintain records of staff training and safety compliance activities.
  • Support new employee safety orientations within the Operations Department.
  • Facilities Support
  • Generate work orders for facility deficiencies identified during inspections.
  • Assist with vendor coordination for hazardous material removal, waste disposal, and recycling services.
  • Assist with small-scale asbestos and lead encapsulation or remediation projects as permitted by certification.
  • Assist the Paint Department with painting and coating projects, including surface preparation, drywall repair, and finishing work as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs related to plaster, drywall, flooring, and similar building materials.
  • Organizational Responsibilities
  • Communicate professionally with District staff, administrators, contractors, and the public.

  • Participate in departmental meetings and planning sessions.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Complete assigned projects within established timelines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the operations of the Maintenance Department.
