Job summary

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) in Des Plaines is seeking to hire an Environmental Protection Engineer 1. This entry-level role provides training in NPDES and state permit applications, working under supervision with municipal wastewater projects and related facilities.

The position offers a 37.5-hour week, pension, tuition reimbursement, and benefits starting day one. A hybrid schedule is available, with in-office days 4–5 per week depending on needs.

Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering science or closely related field.
Preferred knowledge of wastewater pollution and related laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

Assists higher-level staff to gain knowledge in routine engineering functions for municipal wastewater permitting programs.
Assists in the review of State construction and operating permit applications for routine municipal facilities.
Participates in meetings, public hearings, and discussions with applicants, engineers, and other stakeholders.
Maintains records related to permit programs.
Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of duties.
