Job summary

Qualifications

Description / Job Summary
POSITION DESCRIPTION

HGL has a position open for an Environmental Project Manager I to support project work based out of our Reston, VA headquarters. The Environmental Project Manager will manage large-scale, multi-year projects for HGL's government clients, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with other federal and state government clients.

Responsibilities/Duties
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Managing and supporting CERCLA-regulated remediation projects and field investigations at hazardous waste sites.
  • Developing project budgets based on scope and developing project schedules to meet performance and payment milestones.
  • Directing, managing, and leading project teams to meet project objectives in line with corporate and customer quality expectations.
  • Communicating effectively with clients, regulators, project team members, field crews, subcontractors, and company management.
  • Analyzing and interpreting environmental and analytical data.
  • Managing technical and administrative aspects of project deliverables, including reviewing and authoring technical reports, specifically CERCLA Remedial Investigations, Feasibility Studies, Remedial Designs, Remedial Action Work Plans, or similar phases of environmental restoration projects.
  • Procuring subcontractors, developing cost estimates, and overseeing field teams.
  • Managing project risks and developing associated mitigation approaches and strategies.
  • Supporting business development efforts, including leading or supporting proposal efforts.
  • Supervising project staff.
  • Traveling to project sites and client offices, as needed, approximately 10% of the time.
  • Utilizing approved digital and AI-assisted tools, where appropriate, to support technical documentation, data analysis, project communications, and workflow efficiency.
Minimum Requirements
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
  • Minimum 4 years of experience executing and managing EPA, DoD, and/or DOE investigation and remediation projects regulated by CERCLA and/or RCRA.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or other related environmental field of study.
  • Strong technical writing, organizational, and oral communication skills required. The successful candidate will show directly relevant experience that demonstrates a history of responsibility, initiative, motivation, and creative problem solving.
  • Willingness to support technical tasks ranging from fieldwork and field operations; development of specifications; and data management, evaluation, and report preparation.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Knowledge of appropriate methodologies for groundwater, surface water, soil, and sediment sampling at CERCLA and RCRA sites.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills, including the ability to take on multiple tasks, prioritize, and remain organized to ensure timely and accurate work.
  • Ability to build consensus among leadership and stakeholders through effective interpersonal communication and relationship building skills.
  • EPA Superfund experience.
  • Knowledge of CERCLA process and work phases.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adopt new technologies and digital tools to improve project delivery and operational efficiency.
Desired Qualifications
WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT - Preferred, not required
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience mentoring and supervising staff.
  • Current 40-hr OSHA HAZWOPER certification and associated 8-hr OSHA refresher certification.
  • Professional credentials (e.g., PE, PG and/or PMP).
  • Experience with Microsoft Project.
  • Experience using generative AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) to improve technical writing, data analysis, research, visualization, or project delivery efficiency.

PHYSICAL & COGNITIVE REQUIRMENTS
  • Ability to lift/move/relocate items up to 50 lbs; Prolonged sitting or standing up to 70% of the time (depending on task); Walking long distances; Repetitive hand motions (typing, tool use, etc.); Ability to see details at close range and at distance; Viewing computer screen for extended periods; Ability to interpret and analyze visual data (maps, graphs, warning indicators, etc.); Driving a company or personal vehicle; Climbing ladders or stairs.
  • Analyzing and synthesizing data; Complex problem solving and decision making; Reading and interpreting technical documents or regulations; Writing reports, proposals, or technical documentation; Leading a team or coordinating multiple priorities; Communicating effectively with clients, team members, and stakeholders; Managing competing deadlines and shifting priorities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.). Must be able to travel approximately 10% per year. May work in environments with loud noises, dust, or hazardous materials. Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when in the field. Potential for occasional longer workdays of up to 12 hours in duration.

The annual salary for this position ranges from $96,480 - $144,720. This position's final salary can be impacted by various factors including, but not limited to, contractual requirements, geographic location, job-related education, training, experience, and skills.
