Job Title: Environmental Engineer III
Location: Pleasanton, CA

Description/Job Summary
POSITION DESCRIPTION

Join HGL’s growing team in California as an Environmental Engineer III. The Engineer III will provide environmental engineering, remediation, and deputy project management support services to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other federal and state government clients throughout the western United States. This is a hybrid position based out of HGL’s Pleasanton, CA office, with 3 days a week in the office.

As an Engineer III, you will work with our high performing HGL teams and be responsible for supporting HGL’s portfolio of environmental investigation, remediation, and oversight projects for various agencies across the United States and territories. Initial duties will include providing remedial investigation oversight and design oversight as well as oversight of remedial action (RA) projects. This position will also serve as a deputy project manager for large federal projects. Projects may include in situ thermal treatment, vapor intrusion, groundwater treatment (both in-situ and pump-and-treat), mine-waste cleanup, landfill cap construction, contaminated sediment removals, surface water treatment development and operations for organic and inorganics, and stabilization projects.

Responsibilities/Duties
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Developing and providing technical review of engineering studies, plans, designs, and specifications for environmental investigation and remediation.
  • Interfacing with program and project managers, senior technical staff, the government customer, and RA Contractors.
  • Developing technical skills for long term growth and development.
  • Managing characterization and remediation projects for Federal clients.
  • Overseeing and assisting with preparation of project deliverables including remediation work plans UFP-QAPPs, FSPs, RI/FS Reports, SSHP/HASPs, technical memoranda and remedial design documents.
  • Developing alternatives evaluation and design supporting environmental remediation activities, including soil excavation, in situ treatment, air sparging, and waste management.
  • Preparing design calculations, data collection and analysis, conceptual site model development, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Utilizing approved digital and AI-assisted tools, where appropriate, to support technical documentation, data analysis, project communications, and workflow efficiency.
  • Providing technical support during investigation, planning, design, implementation, and completion (as-built) project phases.
Minimum Requirements
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in the environmental engineering field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering related to Environmental Studies such as: Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Chemical Engineering fields.
  • PE or ability to obtain PE within one year.
  • Strong writing and document review skills with prior experience contributing to the preparation of technical reports, memoranda, and work plans.
  • Coordination of field subcontractors for environmental investigation and/or remediation activities. Knowledge and experience on CERCLA and EPA projects.
  • Possess OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adopt new technologies and digital tools to improve project delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute multiple projects and tasks concurrently, while adhering to cost and schedule.
Desired Qualifications
WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT – Preferred, not required
  • M.S. degree in engineering with a focus in Environmental Engineering or related field is a plus.
  • Experience working on state and U.S. federal contracts.
  • Experience with remediation of various contaminants of concern including volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and PFAS investigation and remediation experience.
  • Experience with multiple remedial technologies - evaluation and design.
  • Experience using generative AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) to improve technical writing, data analysis, research, visualization, or project delivery efficiency.
  • Preparation of engineering technical specifications.
  • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP).

WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Potential for longer days up to 12 hours in duration

Work Schedule

HGL office work is dictated by a 5-day work week; however, fieldwork schedules will deviate based on job requirements and may require longer hours and weekends.

Office Type

Hybrid with 3 days in-office and 2 days remote.

Travel

Up to 10% during field seasonas needed.Travel will focus on western US task orders, and other nationwide work as needed.

A favorable pre-hire drug test and physical are required.

The annual salary for this position ranges from $91,991 - $137,986. This position's final salary can be impacted by various factors including, but not limited to, contractual requirements, geographic location, job-related education, training, experience, and skills.
