Job summary

The City of El Cerrito is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support recycling, waste reduction and sustainability initiatives within the Public Works Department. This hands-on role emphasizes program development, field work, and community education to meet city and state environmental goals.

You will research, analyze and implement environmental programs, assist with grants and contracts, and collaborate with residents, businesses, schools and City staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in public administration, environmental sustainability, environmental science, or related field.
• One year of work experience in environmental services, recycling and waste reduction or related field.
• California Driver’s License and clean driving record; ability to obtain CA license within six months if out-of-state.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical assistance to businesses, residents and staff on recycling, waste reduction and environmental programs.
• Conduct field surveys, inspections and data analysis to support program goals and SB 1383 compliance.
• Develop outreach materials, manage grants, contracts and budgeting support for environmental programs.
• Coordinate with partners, haulers and city departments; prepare reports and attend meetings as a representative.
• Plan and deliver promotional programs and community events; monitor and improve program effectiveness.
