Job summary

NiSource Inc. is seeking a Summer Sustainability Intern to join the Environmental Policy & Sustainability team. The role offers hands-on experience in environmental compliance, policy analysis, reporting, and sustainability program development within a utility-focused environment.

The internship runs for 12 weeks starting May 2027, with locations in Columbus, OH or Merrillville, IN. Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location and be enrolled in a related field.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in college/university with focus in Environmental Science, Public Policy, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
• Strong writing, research, and organisational skills.
• High-performance individual eager to learn and ready to take ownership of assigned duties.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively on teams.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze federal and state environmental policies and guidelines to support compliance and strategic planning.
• Prepare written summaries of environmental policies and regulations, highlighting potential impacts on business operations.
• Assist in identifying, developing, and enhancing environmental management systems and programs that are both compliant and proactive.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure environmental programs are effectively integrated across business functions.
• Support data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts to internal and external stakeholders, contributing to transparency and regulatory alignment.
• Drive continuous improvement in organisational sustainability practices through data-driven insights and cross-functional collaboration.
• Support internal reporting and documentation efforts related to environmental initiatives and regulatory developments.
• Develop materials to support team meetings and cross-functional collaboration.
