Job summary

University of South Carolina is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety professional to support compliance and occupational safety across Columbia and regional campuses. The role manages environmental permits, conducts inspections, and aids departments in correcting deficiencies.

It also supports emergency response and provides training and technical guidance to staff and regulators. The position emphasizes regulatory compliance with state and federal requirements, safety program

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2+ years of related experience.
  • Preferred EMS 14001 and/or OHSAS 45001 certified auditor.
  • Fire Life Safety Operations and code knowledge is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the University’s systemwide EPA and environmental compliance & permit tracking programs.
  • Conduct departmental, laboratory, and regional campus environmental and waste inspections and assist in developing corrective action plans.
  • Assist with waste pickups and provide training when necessary.
  • EMS 14001, OHS AS 45001 coordinator and other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Act as emergency management team (EMT) member and provide training on emergency response.
  • Perform and/or review all permit calculations and compliance documents for emissions data and generate reports.

Position Description Advertised Job Summary The Environmental Health and Safety professional supports the University’s environmental compliance and occupational safety programs across the Columbia and regional campuses. This position manages environmental permitting and compliance activities, conducts environmental and workplace safety inspections, and assists departments in identifying and correcting compliance deficiencies.   • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental health and safety principles, applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and University policies and procedures, including requirements related to occupational health, fire and life safety, hazardous materials, and emergency preparedness in a higher education environment.
  • Skilled in planning, organizing, coordinating, and administering environmental health and safety programs while managing multiple priorities and meeting established deadlines.
  • Experience conducting inspections, evaluating compliance, investigating incidents, identifying hazards, and recommending practical corrective actions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including providing guidance, training, and technical assistance to faculty, staff, students, contractors, and regulatory agencies while maintaining effective working relationships across the University community.
  • Proficient in analyzing information, preparing reports, maintaining regulatory documentation, and utilizing computer applications and database systems.
  • Demonstrated sound professional judgment, complex problem-solving skills, and a commitment to continuous process improvement.
