Job summary

Alabama Power in Calera, AL, seeks an Environmental Specialist I to support environmental, compliance, and analytical testing in its Environmental Test Laboratory.

The successful candidate will perform chemical analyses using laboratory instrumentation and approved analytical methods while ensuring regulatory and quality-control requirements are met, with a science or engineering background, attention to detail, and strong analytical problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related science discipline.
• Minimum of 15 semester hours of chemistry coursework.
• Knowledge of EPA, ASTM, Standard Methods, and other analytical reference standards.
• Understanding of laboratory quality-control requirements.
• Ability to follow technical SOPs and analytical procedures.
• Ability to evaluate sample data and interpret technical procedures.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments with competing deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a laboratory team.

Responsibilities

• Perform environmental, compliance, and operational laboratory testing.
• Conduct chemical analyses using various laboratory instruments and analytical methodologies.
• Follow approved EPA, ASTM, Standard Methods, and other applicable reference standards.
• Ensure analytical methods comply with regulatory and customer requirements.
• Establish, monitor, and evaluate analytical data quality-control requirements.
• Review sample data and identify potential analytical or quality issues.
• Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and resolve performance issues.
• Maintain analytical instrument performance and assigned laboratory equipment.
• Monitor laboratory supplies and inventory associated with assigned methods.
• Develop and maintain technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Prioritize and manage daily laboratory workloads and multiple assignments.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation and analytical records.
• Communicate effectively with internal teams, customers, and external work groups.
• Identify unsafe work conditions and support corrective actions.
• Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
