Job summary

The City of Houston is seeking a technical inspector for the Houston Water/Regulatory Compliance unit. The role performs field investigations, collects and analyzes samples, and promotes pollution prevention to ensure regulatory compliance and protect public health and water quality.

Responsibilities include inspections, testing, and reporting on industrial users. Requires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry/ Biology/ Environmental Health Engineering and two years of environmental control

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health Engineering or closely related degree.
• Two (2) years of pollution/environmental control experience is required.
• Preference will be given to applicants with experience implementing pretreatment program requirements and dental amalgam program requirements, industrial wastewater treatment, and investigation of industrial users upstream from treatment plants.
• Possession of a valid driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy.
• Veteran preference per EO 1-6.

Responsibilities

• Collect industrial wastewater and treatment plant samples in accordance with SOPs.
• Perform field analyses (pH, temperature, residual chlorine) using approved methods and maintain analytical equipment.
• Deliver samples to in-house and contract laboratories and maintain chain-of-custody documentation.
• Conduct inspections and field investigations to identify potential sources of treatment plant upsets and monitor dischargers.
• Monitor chemical and microbiological conditions to verify compliance with regulations.
• Review field data for QA/QC and enter results into pretreatment software.
