Job summary

West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection in Fayetteville/Charleston seeks an Environmental Inspector-in-Training to perform technical and field inspections related to water and storm water programs. The role includes enforcing regulations and supporting enforcement actions across multiple counties with substantial travel.

The position requires a four-year degree in natural or applied sciences or related fields, valid driver’s license, and the ability to operate in varying weather

Qualifications

• Must reside within reasonable driving distance of one of the specified offices.
• Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Must be able to walk long distances in adverse weather and lift/carry equipment.
• Must pass a physical examination within the first six months of employment and annually thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections of sites and facilities to ensure compliance with laws, rules, regulations, and permit conditions.
• Investigate complaints related to suspected environmental harm from storm water and other sources.
• Initiate and follow up on enforcement actions for non-compliance, including sampling and reporting.
• Respond to emergencies and provide technical assistance to program staff as needed.
• Travel overnight as required for multiple counties assignment.
