Job description

Anne Arundel County Government is currently hiring for a full-time permanent Environmental Health Specialist I/II-Food Protection Services (Environmental Sanitarian I / II) depending on qualifications with the Anne Arundel County Health Department.

Environmental Health Specialist I/II-Food conducts inspections and investigations to promote environmental health, protect the environment, and enforce State and local health codes, laws, and regulations. Field inspections and investigations are conducted on food service facilities with follow-up actions as necessary.

This is professional, full-performance work involving inspection, investigation, and code enforcement to ensure compliance with various health laws, codes, ordinances, and standards.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

The incumbent is assigned to specific areas within the Division of Community and Environmental Health. Work involves extensive public contact and is performed under the supervision of a higher-level Sanitarian, with independent judgment exercised mainly on routine tasks according to standard procedures. (Note: The listed duties are for minimum qualification and salary determination; they do not encompass all responsibilities of the position.)

  1. Complete inspections for High, Moderate, and Low priority food service facilities, including emergency response, new ownership inspections within 45 days, and routine school inspections in September, January, and May.
  2. Respond to non-emergency complaints within ten (10) working days, and emergency or foodborne outbreak complaints within 24 hours.
  3. Ensure re-inspections for violations are completed within seven (7) working days of notification.
  4. Respond to after-hours emergencies and inspect temporary food service facilities as designated.
  5. Investigate complaints to identify possible violations.
  6. Collect and send samples for testing, interpret results, and determine compliance.
  7. Issue notices of violation and confer with owners/operators to resolve issues.
  8. Prepare and submit reports and documentation for cases and agency goals.
  9. Maintain records and testify at hearings or court proceedings.
  10. Operate departmental vehicles, equipment, and supplies properly.
  11. Participate in training Environmental Sanitarians I.
  12. Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of environmental health programs.
  • Knowledge of natural sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to recognize environmental health issues and apply laws and standards.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to interpret maps, plans, and drawings.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping, inspections, investigations, and surveys.
  • Ability to testify in hearings and court.
  • Skill in operating sampling, testing, and measuring equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Environmental Sanitarian I: $49,908 - $89,654 annually

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college with coursework in biological, environmental, or physical sciences.
  • Certification as a registered environmental sanitarian or eligibility to obtain one from the Maryland State Board.
  • Valid non-commercial Class C driver’s license.

Environmental Sanitarian II: $57,876 - $103,971 annually

  • Same educational requirements as I.
  • Certification as a registered environmental sanitarian with the Maryland State Board.
  • At least one year of professional environmental health inspection experience.
  • Valid non-commercial Class C driver’s license.

Note: The position will be filled at either I or II level based on credentials and experience. This is a proficiency advancement series. Accreditation details and foreign degree evaluation requirements are also specified. Preference is given to applicants with experience in related fields and a license from the Board of Environmental Health Specialists.
