Families & Communities Rising, Inc. is hiring an Environmental Health Specialist to clean and maintain classrooms, offices, and shared spaces in our Durham location.

You will follow a set maintenance schedule, monitor supplies, and report larger repair needs through the work order system. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma and at least three years of building maintenance or janitorial experience, with the ability to lift 25 pounds and operate cleaning equipment.

Description

Families & Communities Rising, Inc. is looking for a dependable Environmental Health Specialist who takes pride in caring for buildings and grounds. Your attention to detail and maintenance skills will help keep our classrooms and shared spaces ready for children, families, staff, and visitors each day.

What You Will Do

Clean and maintain classrooms, restrooms, offices, and shared spaces, including mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, and wiping surfaces.

Follow a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule that works around building activities.

Keep restrooms stocked and monitor cleaning supplies and equipment so replacements are ordered on time.

Use and store cleaning products safely according to manufacturer instructions, Head Start requirements, and childcare sanitation standards.

Remove trash and recycling and arrange special disposal when needed.

Complete minor repairs within your skills and report other repair needs through the ChildPlus work order system.

Keep grounds, entrances, exits, and walkways free of trash and debris, and address weather-related needs such as applying ice melt.

Use appropriate safety signs and secure doors when buildings or spaces are no longer in use.

Join the Center Director for weekly inspections of playgrounds, classrooms, restrooms, kitchens, offices, and storage areas.

Communicate work order progress to the FCR Project Manager and complete other duties assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

What You Will Bring

A high school diploma or equivalent.

At least three years of experience in building maintenance, repairs, cleaning, sanitation, or janitorial work.

The ability to operate basic cleaning equipment and lift at least 25 pounds.

Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Clear written and verbal communication, basic math skills, and accurate recordkeeping.

Basic technology skills, including word processing, Excel, internet use, and report preparation.

Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and applicable childcare, sanitation, building maintenance, and OSHA standards.

The ability to work respectfully with children, families, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.

The ability to contribute to short- and long-term planning for facility and program needs.

Additional Requirements

A valid driver’s license, at least one year of driving experience, and a clean driving record that meets company insurance requirements.

The ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Satisfactory reference and criminal background checks.

A pre-employment drug screening may be required.

Before working with children, a satisfactory TB test or chest X-ray report and a signed medical statement dated within 12 months before employment.

Compliance with applicable federal, state, and local health requirements.
