Job summary

EMD Serono, Inc. in Billerica, MA is seeking an experienced Environmental Health & Safety professional to lead laboratory safety and regulatory compliance across operations.

You will partner with the Manager, EHS to oversee audits, training, radiation safety, incident investigations, and environmental programs, including SPCC/ISO 14001 alignment. This role supports cross-site activities, holds a BA/BS in a relevant field, and requires 4+ years in EHS, with additional biotech lab experience

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in EH&S or related field.
• 4+ years’ experience in an Environmental Health & Safety role.
• 1+ years navigating federal/state/local lab safety regulations in lab or research setting.
• 5+ years direct EHS experience in biotech/pharma lab (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Training & onboarding: develop and conduct annual laboratory safety trainings and orientations.
• Radiation & Vivarium Compliance: assist with radiation safety and vivarium protocols.

• EHS Program Oversight: support facilities safety and OSHA 300 reporting.
• Cross-Site & Staff Support: liaise between R&D and EHS teams and support at the Boston Seaport office.
• Metrics & Stakeholder Communication: support metrics reporting and communications.

Your Role

In this role you will work closely with the Manager, Environmental Health & Safety to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and Corporate standards for all operations at the Billerica Campus. This includes research laboratory operations (~75%) with hazardous chemicals, radioactive materials,and biohazardous materials and facilities operations (25%).

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

• Audit & Safety Committees: Manage the laboratory audit program to drive corrective actions, while leading the Chemical, Biological, and Institutional Biological Safety Committees.
• Training & Onboarding: Develop, update, and conduct annual laboratory safety refresher trainings, new employee and contractor health and safety orientations, and specialized program trainings.
• Radiation & Vivarium Compliance: Assist with the Radiation Safety program—including wipe surveys, audits, and recordkeeping—and review/approve vivarium protocols to ensure compliant operations.
• Incident Investigation & Records: Conduct thorough, documented investigations of near misses, injuries, and incidents, while maintaining complete occupational health, permitting, and training records.
• Environmental Operations & Sustainability: Oversee environmental compliance programs, including hazardous waste management, wastewater operations, sustainability initiatives, and SPCC/ISO 14001 alignment.
• EHS Program Oversight: Support broad EHS program compliance across Facilities Safety (LOTO, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Fire Safety), Construction/Contractor Safety, and OSHA 300 reporting.
• Cross-Site & Staff Support: Serve as the liaison between R&D staff and the EHS Team, assist in supervising contracted EHS staff, and provide periodic EHS compliance support at the Boston Seaport office.
• Metrics & Stakeholder Communication: Support metrics reporting, operational program needs, and regular EHS communications back to internal teams, Corporate EHS, and key stakeholders.

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or other Science or Engineering discipline.
• 4+ years’ of experience in an Environmental Health & Safety role.
• 1+ years of experience navigating and applying federal, state, and local laboratory safety regulations (e.g., OSHA Laboratory Standard, EPA, local EH&S codes) within a laboratory or research environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of direct EHS experience, including laboratory safety operations, in a biotech/pharmaceuticals research laboratory environment with excellent analytical, problem solving and response management skills.
• Safety or Environmental certifications (ASP, CSP, etc.).
• Working experience implementing risk management programs, performing complex risk assessments, etc.
• Licensed as a MA Industrial Wastewater Operator.
• Completed and current with the following trainings: OSHA HazWOPER, RCRA, DOT Haz-Mat, First Aid/CPR/AED.
• Working experience implementing Facilities safety programs (Hot Work, Lockout / Tagout, Work at Heights, Confined Space, etc.).

Pay Range for this position: $93,000 - $139,500 / year

The offer range represents the anticipated low and high end of the base pay compensation for this position. The actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level of experience, education, skills, and other job-related factors.
