Job description

Vast is looking for an Environmental Health & Safety Engineer, reporting to the Sr. Manager Environmental Health & Safety, to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations.

This will be a full-time, exempt position located in our Long Beach location with some travel to our Hawthorne and Mojave Test Site.

Responsibilities:

  • Applies knowledge of environmental, health & safety regulations to evaluate facility projects, process changes, and assist other teammates in defining compliance requirements for processes and equipment.
  • Interacts with federal, state and local regulators to resolve compliance issues; supports regulatory audits/opening, closing and walkthrough.
  • Conducts and/or coordinates employee EH&S training programs to include Respiratory Protection, LockOut TagOut, Emergency Action Planning.
  • Participate in the Investigation of industrial accidents and injuries to determine root cause and preventive measures.
  • Conduct Safety Audits to identify workplace hazards/implement engineering controls and best management practices.
  • Oversee Laser Safety program to include JHA, engineering controls, training.
  • Provide Key Performance Indicators (KPI) using safety audit data to track trends across the company.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to complete Job Hazard Analysis and PPE determination based on tasks/processes.
  • Oversees Hazardous Waste Management Program under Large Quantity Generator status. Performing inspection, ensuring deficiencies are quickly resolved.
  • Partner with Broker to profile hazardous waste streams, lab pack of chemicals, and scheduling of drum/bulk pick-up.
  • Review and interpret new and proposed environmental and or safety laws and regulations, and provide guidance to management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering; Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or a related discipline and/or 6+ years of applicable experience.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying and documenting federal, state and local environmental, health & safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of US EPA, California Air Resources Board, and local California air district regulations, related permit and CEQA guidelines.
  • Hands-on involvement with emergency response teams in incidents involving both hazardous and non-hazardous material releases into the air, soil, and water.
  • Proven background in developing and implementing health and safety plans and policies.
  • Highly detail-oriented and experienced working with cross-functional teams and external customers.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Windows operating systems and Google applications (including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated commitment to hands-on work and meticulous attention to detail, either through academic pursuits or professional experiences.
  • Adept at managing multiple tasks, adapting to changing priorities, and successfully completing projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational abilities and excellent communication skills are a fundamental requirement.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding start-up atmosphere.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, between Long Beach/Hawthorne/Mojave.
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends to support critical mission milestones.
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs unassisted.
  • Specific certifications, as appropriate.

Pay Ranges:

  • Environmental Health & Safety Engineer I: $70,100.00 - $107,000.00
  • Environmental Health & Safety Engineer II: $91,000.00 - $140,000.00

Salary Range: California

$70,000 - $134,000 USD

Base salary will vary depending on job-related knowledge, education, skills, experience, business needs, and market demand. Salary is just one component of our comprehensive compensation package.
