Job summary

OSI Engineering is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to support a fast-paced research lab in Menlo Park, CA. You will handle chemical inventory, waste management, inspections, and safety program support to keep scientists and engineers compliant and safe.

The role emphasizes hands-on lab safety, ownership, and cross-functional collaboration with vendors and regulatory partners. Contract-to-hire with 9am-5pm PT hours.

Qualifications

• 2-7 years of relevant EHS experience in lab or industrial setting.
• Current HAZWOPER training (40-hour initial + 8-hour annual).
• Experience with chemical inventory, hazardous waste handling, and inspections.

Responsibilities

• Manage receipt, labeling, storage, and organization of lab chemicals and gases.
• Maintain chemical inventory, SDS, hazard, and storage records in inventory systems.
• Support hazardous waste operations including labeling, staging, and disposal coordination.
• Maintain waste accumulation areas in compliance with safety requirements.
• Conduct routine safety inspections and assist with corrective actions.
• Monitor safety equipment, PPE, spill materials, gas detection, and EHS supplies.
• Assist with employee safety programs and required training.
• Support regulatory inspections by maintaining records and follow-up.
• Assist environmental sampling, inventory reconciliation, and lab cleanouts.
• Maintain a safe, organized lab environment and address handling/compliance concerns.

Job description

We're searching for an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist. In this role, you'll help support a fast-paced, cutting-edge research laboratory by maintaining a safe, organized, and compliant environment for scientists and engineers. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on work, takes ownership, and is comfortable working across laboratory safety and chemical operations. Responsibilities include chemical inventory management, hazardous waste handling, EHS inspections, safety equipment, environmental sampling, compliance documentation, and employee safety support.

Responsibilities

• Manage the receipt, tracking, labeling, storage, and organization of laboratory chemicals and compressed gases
• Maintain accurate chemical inventory, SDS, hazard, and storage records within laboratory inventory systems
• Support hazardous waste operations, including collection, labeling, staging, container changes, storage, and coordination with disposal vendors
• Maintain waste accumulation areas and ensure chemicals and waste materials are handled in accordance with applicable safety and compliance requirements
• Conduct routine laboratory safety inspections, identify potential EHS concerns, and assist with corrective actions
• Monitor and maintain laboratory safety equipment, PPE, spill-response materials, gas detection equipment, and other EHS supplies
• Assist with employee safety programs, including EHS onboarding, required training, respirator programs, and related documentation
• Support internal and regulatory inspections by maintaining required records and assisting with follow-up activities
• Assist with environmental sampling, chemical inventory reconciliation, laboratory cleanouts, equipment moves, and other EHS-related projects
• Maintain a safe, organized laboratory environment and proactively address chemical handling, storage, labeling, and compliance concerns

Qualifications

• 2-7 years of relevant experience required
• Experience with chemical inventory systems
• Familiarity with Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDF)
• Current HAZWOPER training required, including 40-hour initial training and 8-hour annual refresher certification
• Experience in semiconductor, technology, biotech, or similar industrial environments preferred
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
• Ability to safely move containers, handle supplies, and work effectively in an active laboratory environment
• Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with scientists, engineers, vendors, and regulatory partners

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with hazardous materials transportation (DOT) and hazardous waste disposal; experience in both areas is preferred
• Experience with environmental sampling
• Familiarity with DOT shipping requirements; considered a plus but not required
