Job summary

James Hardie is seeking an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) internship to gain hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment. You will support process improvement initiatives, documentation management, and site safety programs to drive compliance and operational excellence.

The intern will update facility and emergency maps, identify EHS improvement opportunities, track corrective actions, and present final outcomes.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in a relevant discipline with anticipated graduation between December 2027 and May 2029.

• Assist with environmental compliance activities, including chemical inventories, waste inspections, spill-prevention readiness, stormwater reviews, and record-keeping.

Internship Objective

Gain hands‑on experience in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) by supporting process improvement initiatives, documentation management, and site safety programs within a manufacturing environment. The intern will develop technical, analytical, and communication skills while helping create accurate, organized, and sustainable EHS resources that support compliance and operational excellence.

By the end of the internship, the intern will update and field‑verify facility and emergency response maps, identify and document EHS improvement opportunities, track corrective actions to completion or ownership assignment, and present a final summary of project outcomes, recommendations, and opportunities for continued improvement. The internship will provide a strong foundation in manufacturing EHS practices, hazard identification, and cross‑functional collaboration.

What You’ll Do:

Internship Responsibilities

• Review and update facility line drawings, fire extinguisher maps, evacuation routes, severe weather maps, and emergency equipment locations.
• Assist with environmental compliance activities, including chemical inventories, waste inspections, spill‑prevention readiness, stormwater reviews, and record‑keeping
• Collaborate with EHS team members to ensure training materials reflect current policies, procedures, and best practices.

What You’ll Bring:

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in a relevant discipline at an accredited university, with an anticipated graduation date between December 2027 and May 2029 (rising junior or rising senior).
• Strong academic performance with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
• Available to work full‑time for 12 weeks during summer 2027.
• Reliable transportation to and from the work location.
• Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Skills

• Target major: pursuing degree in OESH/Environmental Science/Industrial Hygiene
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, even AutoCAD may be helpful.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable spending time on the production floor and engaging with plant operations.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay scale for this position is $20 to $25 per hour. Placement in the range depends on several factors such as experience, skills, geography and may change over time.
